Navy For Moms

My son is currently in A school. I understand that he can earn college credit for boot camp and A school training. My question is how does he go about getting these credits officially. I would think he would have to apply to a college and pay for the credits to be transferred, but he doesn't think he has to do anything. I hope I'm wrong, but I think he is missing the boat (hehehe...no pun intended). Thanks for any information.

Greetings, the Navy College program is excellent and you can check under their "rating roadmaps" page to see the "recommended" credits for specific ratings/paygrades and courses. It's up to the specific educational institution to determine what credit to accept, and fees, etc. Hope this helps.
Happy 4th of July! Kevin

Hi Navydadkevin, I went to the web page you suggested and got a message that the website does not exist. Is there something missing in the address?

I googled Navy College and the website moved to
https://www.netc.navy.mil/ however when I click on the Navy College link I get "can not connect to JRun server." Wonder what's up with that?

Patricia and CTmomof3, I have previously visited the website reference above and it was working. However, I received the Jrun error as well. I went to the bottom of the page on the site to "contact us" and sent them an email about the problem. You might also want to do that. Also, I asked NavyDad some specific questions about the credits earned during bootcamp and A school...he was very helpful and explained that the Navy puts these credits on what they call a SMART transcript. It is up to the sailor (after he finishes all training and is ready to begin studies at an educational institution) to request the SMART transcript be sent to the institution of chose for review and consideration. He suggested that once the sailor is settled in his job, he should speak with The Navy College Office or his Education Officer. His full response is in the comment section of my page. Hope this helps...I know it put it in layman's terms for me.

Fortunately, the Sailors can get a copy of their SMART transcripts via the Navy Knowledge Online (NKO) site.

The American Counsel on Education (ACE) makes recommendations for how much credit the Navy courses should count towards; and these are listed on the SMART transcript.

And then, there are many colleges that have agreements with the Navy to take all the ACE credits earned in a particular rating. Other colleges who don't have agreements with the Navy may or may not honor all the credits on the SMART transcript and you'd have to contact each college separately. Some colleges are more "Navy friendly" than others.

The Navy has the concept of a "roadmap" for each rating to show what college credits get earned and what colleges have agreements with the Navy.
Each college that is listed (after clicking on the rating link) will show what credits in each category that they will accept.

Hey Nancy~ So glad to see you have brought your vast knowledge over here to the newer mom's. I was going to tell them to have their sailors check NKO as well. You're the best!

The Navy also has a spouses to teachers program for college as well.

You cannot believe how grateful I am for the information and tips I get from this site!
I pass things like this on to my sailor and let him run w/ it to ensure he gets the most out of his Naval experience.

Thank you everyone for all the help.

This discussion was SO informative. I'm putting your replies into a letter to my son who just entered A School in GL. Like the other parents, I want my sailor to get everything he can out of this wonderful opportunity.

Hi Sheila,

es far as i know and i remember from my husband what he had to do. He started at a college and there requirement was that he had to take 3 classes first then they would avaluate his Military Credits, but every college is different so he might needs to talk to his Educational Advisor where he will be stationed at later.
