Just a bit of personal experience with the Red Cross - My father passed away the same day my son left for boot camp. I contacted the Red Cross to have them get a message to Jeremy. This was in October of 2001. Jeremy didn't get his message till he reached San Diego in January of 2002. They do good work, but aren't always reliable.

My son was contacted by the Red Cross as he was in training for going to Iraq (yes they do send our sailor boys to Iraq) because his grandpa died. Thats all they do. My son was left in the middle of no where at 4 in the morning to get a plane and get back here for the funeral.

Red Cross was very helpful and prompt for us in April. Cody's father had a stroke at age 50 and was immediately put on life support. I called red cross at 11pm that night and Cody was leaving base at 7 am. with everything taken care of. A week later when the had to remove him from life support i called back and they arranged another week for Cody to be here to attend funeral and such. I found them to be very helpful.
