Navy For Moms

My son (Kyle) just called yesterday from BC and said he was coming home. He said he is getting a medical discharge for depression. If I am understanding all that I have been reading he will be sent over to ship 17, and that scares me to death. Is there anything that I can do to speed up the process to get him the hell out of there? I read in one of the post to contact legal, does anyone have the number?

I am so sorry to hear that about your son. I dont know anything about legal but I have found a Navy Chief that has answered a lot of questions for me. If you would like his cell number let me know. He and I discussed ship 17 yesterday and he said that stuff should not be going on and wants all the info he can get about it.

How far is your son in BC?

He entered BC on 9/5. I just spoke with legal and they will interview him on Thursday or Friday. Please contact me at lisazab@aol.com. I would like his cell phone #. I a scared to death because I have no idea how depressed my son is and the conditions I have read about ship 17 leads me to believe he will come in worse shape then his is at this current moment

I have read some positive posts about the changes in Ship 17, so try not to worry too much. You should post this in the Ship 17 Group, there's a lot of people who could help you there.

Lisa, I understand your concern for Kyle. Joining the Ship 17 group was a good call on your part. There is tons of information and help in that group. My son is currently there as well, and will be coming home on Friday after being there for only 15 days (including weekends). Things are getting better in Ship 17 then what they were earlier this summer.

renee it takes at least 2 weeks to get thru Ship 17, sometimes more. Your son needs to follow the paperwork and be sure there are no errors on it when he signs anything. My son has been home since May. He had a double wammy as his GF was playing games with him and they finally broke up in Oct. They sometimes have trouble sleeping when they come home. Perhaps School is a thought.

Hi Renee,

Kyle has been home for about 6 wks now. He has been doing ok. He is feeling like a failure, being on ship 17 for 3 wks did not help either. It's not how he was treated there, it's the fact that he had watched several graduated classes come through with there parents, knowing that will not be him did not help with the depression. Since he has been home he has been busy trying to find a job....no luck. He is also filling out forms to go to the local coledge here. I am hopeful that once he finds a job and starts school he will start feeling better about himself, we continue to let him know we are proud of him. It took about 4 wks before he really let it out and shared with us how he was feeling. So when your son comes home just give him lots of love and be patient let him figure out what he wants to do. Give him time to adjust.

Hi Lisa.. I was 5 days from graduation BC and after battle stations they found my asthma by looking into my civilian medical records! My mom wanted to know the same thing you do and unfortunatly they take there sweet time getting you outta there so just keep your head up!! Expect 3-4 weeks. The steps are IN DOC, Legal anywhere from 2-7 business days after IN DOC, Then PSD about 7 business days after legal then the final step is the departure list 3-7 days after that. Calling will only take longer because they have to put the papers in pause to go over it and give you the info you need! Keep your head up... If you have any questions please feel free to ask me. I will tell you anything you wanna know!!
