Navy For Moms

Hey all,
When do our guys/gals get their first pay in boot camp. I know pays are the 1st and 15th of the month. My son left me some instructions and his pay wasn't direct deposited. He left for boot camp on Oct 2nd. I know they take out for uniforms and such but do they get a check first? I have to plan and make sure he has $$ in his bank account. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks
Maryanne

it took two paydays for my son's direct deposit to start. He said that they did take out some of his expenses, I don't know what ones or how big his check was, I don't have access to it. He also told me that the check could not be divided between his home account and Navy Credit union it had to go to one place untill he was out of A school so he just put everything in his Navy checking account.

my husband left sept. 2 and I didnt get a direct deposit untill oct. 1st. it was a big check, remember its gunna be a month's worth of pay, so the next one you get on the 15th will be smaller.

Chrystal, How much do they take for uniforms, I thought the Navy gave allowances to soldiers for their uniforms etc..Not sure..maybe that starts next year Thanks Maryanne

Wanda, I am sorry, but call the bank and explain it, also make sure they lower his interest rate. Do you have power of attorney? Maybe you can ask them to stop the draft and make an interest payment this month.Check it out. Maryanne

Wanda, When he arrived did he bring a voided check from his bank account from home? They cant force him to deposit his money in the credit union. I think once he gets settled, same as my son, it isn't a bad thing to join the credit union and have some money go into a saving with the navy..but I'm in the same shape you are. I have handled his finances since college and once he gets settled he will take care of his own...which is the way it should be. Michael has a debit/credit card with his bank too. I did find out THIS IS GREAT.. that some credit cards have a payment protector plan..my son had it and i didn't know it (I would have canceled it..ha ha ha) so anyway they are going to MAKE his payment for two years..how about thatbecause he is in the military. This way it will get paid down quicker by Michael making additional payments. But I know what you mean..it's hard to plan right now. Maryanne

okay...sorry I wasn't more clear Wanda. My son wanted to put x amount in his home acount for his auto bill pay, with the rest going to the navy credit union for his personal use. At bootcamp, they would not let him do that. He could have put it all in his home acount or all of it in his navy credit union checking. He chose the navy one for now, and when he goes to a school he will divide as he see fits. hope that helps.
They can put their money any place they want.

ps. they are automaticly given a navy credit acount number, you or who ever he put as his next of kin and home address will get a package from the credit union. If he doesn't want to use the acount, it is never activated and that is fine with the Navy, but everyone gets the package with the inserts about what is available.

Steve's bank stuff came around the 3rd week of bootcamp. I never opened it cause I am like you, I don't want anything to do with it. lol
Other discussions about this topic say that their bank card and and all the paper work is in it along with flyers about loans, credit cards, ect. all that stuff that banks sell. I just tossed it in the pile that goes to Great Lakes when I go see him, I was not going to mail anything bank related. They really don't need much money while at bootcamp, and they are given that nex card.
I just checked my son's account and nothing yet. He arrived at GL the 24th, so he's had 2 pay periods go by. Wait, wait, wait...the Navy mantra!

I have no Idea what they have taken out for anything!! I am upset, being the wife and doing the finances while he is gone, I don't have access to a paystub, apparently it is all online...? I have NO idea what we are getting or what is getting taken out for what, I was forwarned that we would not be getting 'steady' amount paychecks untill he is done with A-school.

he did take a voided check from our current bank, Wells Fargo, and that is where his money got deposited.

My son went in the same day, but ended up hanging around a week waiting to start (ugh!) I checked his account today and no activity yet. Looks like it's going to take until the 1st.
