Navy For Moms

Hi to all. My son is right now sitting at a hotel awaiting the morning swearing in and being put on an airplane. I sit here at my computer already getting support from this great site. I was hoping to find others who have their recruits with that lovely unknown Christmas time graduation date. My son is 18, and for the most part has always been around. I was fine until this evening when I got home from work and realized he wasn't here. I couldn't be prouder of the decision he has made and look forward to his adventures he will have. I am glad he at least has done the whole buddy program and at least has one person he knows right now. I also can't wait to see him in his uniform. He is so tall and thin, but I think that will make him a bit easier to spot at his PIR. I am slowly learning those acronyms.Would love to hear from those moms who have others in the Christmas batch.

My son just left yesterday. Or rather, I dropped him off yesterday and he left today. I had been told I'd get a quick "I'm here" phone call when he arrived, but now I've read that it's not always the case. Yesterday evening was definitely NOT a good night. I don't think any of us (my husband and two daughters) slept well at all. But, I know that he made his decision after a lot of thought, and I think it will be a good one for him. He'll be going to Charleston after GL for nuke school. I'm wondering as well about the PIR date for this group. My son's recruiter told him that there's a good chance his graduation will be moved up to the 19th. I thought I'd make hotel reservations for both weekends and cancel whichever one we don't need. Sure hope it's the 19th and not the 26th! I'd love to hear from other moms who have some tips on getting through this. My son is a little older (22) and has lived on his own for awhile, but he always seemed to be hanging around the house and it is definitely going to take some getting used to not having him around.

They let out for Christmas Break on Dec19th thru Jan 4th. Here is the email address for the Recruit Training Center. Write them with your questions on the PIR(Parade in Review) AKA Graduation.

My good guess would be on the 19th!

So my Fiance got shipped out on the 27th, is everyone saying the PIR will be the 19th? Or is that for another ship pit date?

Thanks :)

Hello - The PIR date is helpful to know. As of right now, I was assuming it was the end of December. It's hard planning a trip, when the dates may be moving. My son is also 18 and arrived at BC last night. We were lucky to get a 40 second call. It sure helped hearing his voice. But doesn't help with the void of him not being in the house. My husband and I stand by our son's decision and we are very proud. But, that doesn't make it any easier on us. We too are not sleeping well. I believe every day helps getting us stronger. Thanks for this news and let's all stay strong for our wonderful sons and daughters.

HI
Linda! Im Barb Penhalegon's sister inlaw! Jan.
How are you doing? This is a very hard time for all. I was so thankful I was working everyday. It helped time go past faster. I also kept my cell phone on me at all times. After a few weeks - Christian called and if I hadn;t had my cell on me I would have missed the call!
If you ever want to chat - please let me know- Barb will have my number!
I was lucky - I had a friend who's husband had been in the Navy. I could talk to her!

Now you may have to check my facts on this, but from my understanding, recruits DO NOT get leave during basic. That's only for sailors stationed at Great Lakes for A School, etc. Recruits only get Christmas Day off, but they don't get a week.

I don't know if this will help but just recently I've been told that Boot Camp can not be more than 59 days. Does that help you at all? ~ Joanne

Hello. My son left for boot camp yesterday. He went to Great Lakes. I waited all night for his phone call but never got it. He called me from the Baltimore airport where he was waiting with 8 other recruits to get on the plane. This is harder than I though. My son is 20 years old and we support him all the way. Does anyone know exactly when their graduation will be?

Hi Tatiana, my name is Ramona. My son graduated back in June, and I know how you feel waiting for that phone
call. My son called us from the hotel room where he stayed, but not all of them will do that. If not you probably will get a call a couple of days after he goes for processing when he gets to boot camp, and that will be a quick
5 min. call. My son called us late, but it was so good to hear his voice. He had been up all night and was really tired, but boot camp will be much like that. You should soon get an info. letter from the Navy Command with all the info. on graduation and a little note from your son. What is such a blessing to us is that now that our son is graduated he is going to school there in GL and bought himself a cell phone and calls us like every other day.
Hope this info. helps.

Your recruitor will get an idea of the date for PIR

Ok, here is what I would do. Seeing as tho they JUST left.. you could either wait it out a week and call your son's/daughter's recruiter and see if they have their address info yet, they should have it by then (rather than waiting for the box of personal belongings to come home along with their address info) There is alot of processing stuff they need to do in the first week so it's pretty hectic for all. If and when you have the address you can call this number- 1-847-688-2405, thats for the Recruit Training Command up there and ask them for the PIR date for your recruit.. you will need to have their ship and division # handy and they should be able to tell you when it will be. This is what I did when my son went in back in Feb. I also called them a few other times just to make sure the date they gave me was still current from time to time. Also keep in mind that things happen to recruits and it sometimes can set them back. They do have certain things they need to pass. Hope that helps you all out a little. Good luck to all!!!

My son is 24, arrived in Great Lakes the night of the 27th. No phone call yet, just a quick text when he was on his way from the airport to BC. It would be great if PIR was on the 19th, it might make travel a little easier. My son is married but was only gone from home for about 1 month, he got married 10/07. I think I got double the seperation anxiety. His wife hasn't received a call either. I am very proud of my son, I feel he made a great choice. Before he left he told us he would be going to Mississippi for A school. We all miss so much.
