My son finally had a meltdown last week about how much stuff he needed to get but either didn't have time for or he simply forgot. He requested that I post some of the things that all NUKE's need in A school. He said that a great idea would be to send them the day before graduation to the indoc address as it never changes. The address is:

                                         FN, first name, last name

                                         class: INDOC

                                         101 NNPTC Circle

                                          Goose Creek, SC 29445

This way all new sailors will have everything they need when they get their.

This is his list:

  •       -bowls/silverware
  •       -can opener
  •       -laundry det./dryer sheets
  •       -ironing board/iron
  •       -personal hyg. (body wash, cologne, deoderant, etc)
  •       -twin sheets (they are provided but my son tells me they "suck")
  •       -sneakers
  •       -black socks
  •       -white/blue t-shirts (to replace the ones from boot camp, again he says it's a quality issue)
  •       -something to do (books, video games, cards, etc.)

He also said that he has picked up extra's of Navy issued things and highly reccomends getting extra of the following as soon as you get to GC:

  •    -NSU cover (1 or 2)
  •    -dress whites cover
  •    -ribbons
  •    -pt gear (at least one more set, two would be better)

I hope this helps! Also veteran moms please add anything that you think would help.

What does SN stand for?

Not all rates are SN coming out of bootcamp.  Some are FN (Fireman - this is for the MM's only) so be sure you have the right name for your sailor right out of bootcamp.

Could someone tell me what the indoc address is for the A School in South Creek, SC?  Thanks!

Is this list suggested for right after boot camp when they leave for South Carolina? My son is just beginning boot camp. I got the box, but not PIR date or Clara/division. Does anyone know if NUKEs are in a special group at bc or not? He told me he was in P hold, before processing but I think others who left the same time already have their info. My son arrived aug 16 th at bc. N

They are not in a special division.  He may be in hold for a 900 division, which is a performing division. Once you have his division number you can go to the RTC site and find the PIR date.  Someone with a more recent BC grad will come along soon and add more info.  Good luck - get ready for the roller coaster ride!!

Wonders520, yes this list is for right after boot camp. The first week or so your sailor is in GC he will be in indoctrination. My son tells me that the stuff above is all needed but some is easy to forget unless you need to use it.

An update on sneaker balls and microfiber cloths - Amazon was a good source and they were a hit.

She also asked for air freshener since their room inspection includes whether there's an "unpleasant fragrance" :)  It can't plug in or be a candle or anything with a heating element. She  said one of those automatic sprays would work so I sent her an Airwick (order it online and let them ship it since you can't mail aerosols through the USPS).  We'll see how that goes over.

By now she's tired of Subway and the galley closes right around the time study time ends, so that's not always an option. I'm going to send microwave meals and protein bars.  Have to keep those gray cells fueled.

Well my son is heading off to boot camp on Tuesday (10/23/12) and after that he will be on to Goose Creek for nuke school!  I guess I will start working on getting these items together so I can ship them once he arrives.  Here I thought once we got everything in order for boot camp we were done - silly me!  I know I have seen some mention of microwavable meals that people send - what brand are these?  I'd like to start looking now.  So do they have a microwave in their room once they get to Goose Creek or is it a common area where they use the microwave?

My son is currently in BC with a 12/21/12 PIR.  We found out that he will have some holiday leave so we get to have him home for Christmas!  Guess when he is home we will start picking up some of these items he will need for A school.

Do the sheets have to be a certain color?  Do we also buy the blankets and the comforter or is that provided by the Navy? Our youngest went off to college in August and this feels like the same thing - getting his "dorm room" ready!

When my son arrived in Goose Creek in November of 2010, they were issued all of their bedding.  He chose to go purchase his own at the NEX because he has a thing about using old, worn out bedding.  As far as I know the bedding does not have to be any particular color.  I know his sheets were blue and he had an AZ Cardinals blanket over the top of his bed, plus some fancy, printed pillow cases.  You might get him a mattress cover and mattress pad to help make the bed a bit more comfortable.  Also, they can't control the heat and cold in their rooms, so be sure he has a good, warm blanket for the winter and he may want to get an oscillating fan for the summer to have some air flow. Oh, and the longer twin sheets work best.

My mom made a special quilt for our recruit when he was 16 (she makes them for all the kids in the family - grandkids, cousins, everybody!).  It's nice and heavy, but also HUGE (think Queen sized).  Do you have any idea what size the beds are?  I can have her make one for me to give him at PIR (or take down to him) if I have an idea of the size of the bed.

I thought I remember reading somewhere on here that they said the beds are the twin size - but the extra long. Kind of like the ones in the college dorm rooms.
