Navy For Moms

I'm very new to all this... Hi, I'm Esther, my friends call me Es for short.

My son has thought about the military since he was a senior in high school (2006), but it wasn't until he was laid off from his job that he REALLY thought about it. He made his choice in early February 09' and was taking tests and doing drills right away. He took his tests and past them with high scores... And I must say he has choosen a VERY good job and the blessing was that it was open to him almost right away.

Tim left for basic training on March 10, 2009 barely a month after signing up. Actually I saw him off from the recruiting office the afternoon of the 9th. I almost didn't let go of my boy. The thought that I may not see him until Christmas still tears me up. We're trying to see if we can swing the tickets and such for graduation May 1st. It's so hard to believe that he's gonna graduate from basic training in just over 7 weeks!!

Okay, so I'm wondering are there ANY Moms of children new or old to the Navy in the Pacific North West??? We are in Portland, Oregon. I'd love to share some of what I'm feeling and going through with other Moms out there and close to home.

Tim's Section Leader for Division 178, ship 13 of the USS Marvin G. Shields.

Would love to hear back from any Mom!!
My best, Es

Es, there are a couple of groups for Pacific Northwesterners. One is Washington and Oregon moms and they're very active. Almost all of them are from Washington. Another is Southern Oregon and Northern California moms, not very active at all. I'm from Ashland (OR) so am at the other end of the state from you.

My son graduated boot camp last July, went to Pensacola for A school and is now in San Diego, finishing up his training to be an Aviation Rescue Swimmer.

SInce your son is still in boot camp you should join some of the boot camp moms groups. You can get all the info you need there........welcome aboard!

Ester,
I am not in the Pacific NW, but my sailor is. He is stationed in Washington state, and has been there for over a year. He loves it and the pictures he has sent us are beautiful. As Chris A stated, there are several groups that you should look into, the Washington/Oregon moms, the boot camp moms, and you already know which ship your son is on, you can start your own group of moms with sailors on that specific ship. You can click on "groups" and see all the different groups on our website. There are tons!!!!! If I can help you in any way, please let me know. Welcome Aboard, Navy Mom.

Hi Es!

I'm not a Navy Mom, but a soon to be Navy Wife from Bellevue, WA. My husband is seriously considering the Navy Reserves. I'm dreading him leaving but at least I'll be able to visit him after basic training. I will be a mess when he goes.
My hubby will be like a "grandpa" of the others since he is 39 years old and he's wondering what to expect at basic training.

I didn't know that over 35 could enlist... had he ever been in the military before??

I'm sure he'll be just fine in Basic, especially since he'll be twice their age. They do learn a lot of respect, that I've heard in my son's voice when I've gotten to talk to him.
