Guess what? I got my 10 second call at around 9:30pm tonight. I could hear them yelling in the background and my son knew he had seconds to tell me he was ok....which I knew from our earlier conversation when he was on his cell in Chicago. My advise to any of our sailors...take your cell phone and call as everyone is getting off of the plane. Nobody is yelling and you are not rushed. It was a great 10 second call and I didn't have time to cry. Jimbo told me he would call in about three weeks from now. I hope you all get your calls soon and not at 2 or 3 in the morning.

my son shipped out yesterday - I got my 30 second phone call 12:30 am this morning :) yes it has been a rough few days - I have been crying at the mention of his name. He told me I couldn't cry when he called so I bucked up and put a smile on my face before picking up the phone. I did get to talk to him when he was in salt lake, the flight was delayed a few hours so he was making some calls. He hooked up with a group of 25 others heading to boot camp - from Utah and CA.

My son shipped out today, Jan.7th from Boise, Id. I also rec'd the ten second call around 9pm tonight. I wasn't sure what he said as it was a broken call but at least I know he is there in Chicago and o.k.?! I too, have been crying off and on all day and since the hotel last night. It's pretty hard to let them go when you don't know what is going to happen and all.

my son shipped out yesterday for bc, i gave him all the support, mothers out there if you read this. The best thing is to cry before they leave. I cried for a month before, and my son never saw me cry. but when he left, tears were in my eyes, but not as bad as i thought. i felt so much better, and i spoke to him from new york all the way to Chicago, and even when he got on the bus he texted me. so i never lost contact with him. so if your kids have cell phones let them take it. you will feel so much better hearing from them every now and then , until there last phone call, which i got already. All he said was that he loves me and that i will hear from him in about a month. i feel so much better. We mothers have to see it as if they are growing up, and they have to leave us one day. Im just looking forward to seeing him again!!!! Thanks to this site N4M, I love all you guys.. Ahoy!!!!! to our sailors...

My daughter shipped out from Boise on Tuesday (Jan. 6th). Got her 30 second call at around 11:00. I cried a lot before she left, but not in front of her (in the shower, in bed, in the pantry huddled over the trash can - 'cause there's really not that much room in the pantry, but I felt the need to cry while I was cooking her last meal at home). We both cried when we dropped her at the hotel, but I held it together for the phone call. I knew I'd miss her terribly - and I was right. I can't wait to get her first letter.

My son shipped out yesterday, January 7th form San Diego. Fortunately, he decided to take his cell phone with him at the last minute and I was able to talk to him after he arrived in Chicago. We then planned to have him call my answer machine for his 1 minute call from BC, so he could leave a message rather than talk to me in person... but now I have his message to listen to when I need to. Before he called at about 5:30 Pacific Time, I changed my answer machine greeting and on it I told him how much I love him and how proud I was... and Happy Birthday! since his birthday is today. I'm so glad he took his cell because "the call" was very serious and obviously scripted.

My call finally came at 11:05 pm last night. It was no more than 10 seconds too. It sounded like he was reading from a script. " I'm here Mom. Look for a call in 30 days and a package in the mail. Love you. Bye." Then I could hear (in the background) "Get off the phone!" I did finally relax and sleept good last night.
