Navy For Moms

My son will is a Senior this year, looking at DEP. He goes next Tuesday to take his ASVAB. He has been tutored this summer & is as prepared as he's going to be for the academic part. But.... he's not a great test taker & he absolutely never sits still for 3 continuous hours. I've been told that they sometimes can wait hours before they even get to take the test. We're in the Phoenix area. Any suggestions on how he can get past the mind games & keep focused? I'm really worried.

My son took a lot of practice ASVAB tests he found online before taking it with the recruiter. If he is going to MEPS to take it, he should be allowed a book and cell phone while he is there to keep himself occupied while waiting.

thanks, I'll tell him. The recruiter told us last week a guy waited almost 4 hours before taking the test! That's what worried me, he won't be able to stay focused. He has taken the practice tests at the recruiter's office & has had a tutor who was an Army Ranger & was very helpful. At this point, all I can do is hope for the best.

Keep a positive thought, I'm sure he will do great!! My sailor didn't practice at all and passed with flying colors! Don't worry, it doesn't do anyone any good...and besides there's so much bigger stuff coming in his future for you to worry about, this test is a very small part of his Navy life. Hang in there and it will be OK!!

Thanks for the advice. I know this is only the beginning of obstacles to overcome, and probably the least! But I've spent so many years guiding his education & worrying, I just want it overwith. I know he can retake it, and he'd do better the second time I'm sure, after just having the experience. He doesn't like new things, but it's time to step up & get used to it. He's less worried than I am, so I'll just cross my fingers & say a prayer!

He passed! He got a 50, more than we hoped for so we were really happy. He goes down tomorrow for the physical & everything, then he'll be official. He's looking forward to his Senior year and then the Navy! Thanks for the support. Are you in the Phoenix area? Once he's official, I want to figure out how to become part of the DEP group on this website & hopefully find some other Phoenix area families. I'm sure we'll have lots of questions in the next year as he prepares to enter the real thing.

Well, we went down to MEPS yesterday. hayden did fine on his physical but he is color blind. we've known that, but it's only slight so it's never been a problem before. But... it lets out quite a few of the jobs he was interested in. None of the ones he wants are available so we have to wait until one comes open before he gets sworn in. He was really dissapointed. The job counselor thinks something will come open this week if he can get it. we're back to crossing our fingers!

Sorry for the bad news! You can't be color blind for the job my son has, either. I hope something comes along he really wants. There's a lot of "hurry up and wait" in the Navy, this is one of those times.
