Navy For Moms

My son went to Boot Camp in May...a week before graduation he had a severe stress fracture in his leg. They put it in a cast and as he was leaving he slipped in some water and ended up breaking that leg. He has been in a cast and recently had it taken off, Now going through therapy. This is killing me not knowing what is going on...we haven't seen him and we rarely get to talk. I spoke to him last night and he is getting pretty depressed. Isn't there anyone that we can contact to see what is going on?

My husband and I are firm believers of thinking positive so if everyone could just say a little prayer or even have a positive thought for the goalie from Illinois to get better we would appreciate it :)

sending positive thoughts your and your sailor's way. He is an adult therefor his medical stuff is protected under hippa, so what he shares with you is what you get to know. He is in a med unit, doing what he can around the base and getting better. If the injury heals well, and he is cleared by the Navy Dr. he will get to do his pt test and battlestations and move on to his A school.
Any bone injury aside from a slight stress fraction usualy takes 6 plus weeks to heal. Did you get his address? Sending cards, and letters help. Also, in some med. units they can have books, magazines, cards, board games. Next time you speak with him, find out. I would be willing to send a care package and a get well card if it is allowed. If it is allowed make sure you share his address by personal message.

Sending positive thoughts and prayers his way! I imagine that must be very difficult! I hope you are able to figure out what is going on soon!

He is in a unit called RCU (Recruit Convelesant Unit). A special unit set aside for recruits who get hurt. They have a team in his ship (Ship 6) to help with his mental health. A Chaplain is located in that ship. Know that he is getting good care, send him letters, stay positive with him.

Chances are when he heals he will return to the same point in training that he left. That means as soon as he is better and healed he will be very close to graduation. Encourage him to keep studying and doing what he can PT wise!

thank you everyone...

I guess I do sound like a little frantic...haha We have had experience with the Navy, our oldest served 5 years and is now home going to school. This time around is just a little different for us. When our son called one time a couple of months ago he mentioned that there was a waiver he could sign that would let them discuss his medical treatment with us. The person that told him about this is gone and now no one seems to know what he's talking about. Like I said we are not new to the Navy so I do know that sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing :) We have kept the letter writing going strong for 6 months now. I will suggest to him that he speak to the chaplain next time I talk to him. He is defitnitely not a wimpy kid by any means not after the beatings he took in hockey.
