Navy For Moms

Hi everyone! I'm so glad to have found this site! My question is this... my son leaves for BC on January 7th and is going in as a nuke. He has been DEP, and realized recently that he really doesn't want to be a nuke. (He's not very good at math...) He was finally able to talk to his recruiter today, and was told to go in as a nuke and transfer during BC, when they meet with counselors. His ASVAB score was high so the recruiter told him he's eligible for any program he wishes. I'm concerned because I was under the impression that once they go in, it's harder to change programs. His recruiter made it sound as if he HAS to go in as a nuke since he leaves in a week. Can anybody confim this? He's now interested in going into Intelligence and I hate to have him go through unecessary hassles. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! - Denise

Im not sure if I am doing this right but I have a question as I am new to the Navy Mom life. My son is in his A school for medical corpman and has been DE for failing his third test; however up to this point he has been given a second chance and has pasted the second time around. My question is this depending on what he picks to do from the job list given to him and say for some unknown reason this doesnt work either can the Navy discharge him? He seems to like the Navy but has a hard time with tests and test aniexty what can be done to help him to achieve his next goal?

If he gets another "A" school and fails out of that one, they will send him undes to to the fleet.

Hi Jane!

Yes, let's definitely stay in touch! I'll go to your page and write you there. I hope our boys get a chance to meet. I would imagine that it's a possibility since they're both Nukes. Fingers crossed!

Oh and my new name here is Mother Hummer ( I've raised hundreds of baby hummingbirds ) but I'm still the original 'poster' Denise ... just in case it's confusing. There were just so many Denise's here... which is funny because I rarely come across any Denise's where I live.

Denise:
I just signed up here and saw your question. I know it is too late to comment on the question itself, but, did your son leave already? Did he get to change to Intelligence? I had an experience with my son changing jobs after boot camp. Hope all is well and hope to talk with you. Nanci

Hey Nanci! I just got a form letter from him tonight with his address. He left for BC last Wednesday,so I'm happy to get his address so soon. In his comments, he said that they are making him stay as a Nuke, so I guess that's that. I'd be interested in hearing your son's story. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! - Denise

You are so lucky you received a letter already. My son hates to write and the entire 9 weeks he was gone I received 1 letter from him. Know that your son is learning and growing and is being taken care of! Talk soon.

Hi Denise, I was reading this post today and just wanted to ask you if you had heard from your son and how he is doing? My son will be leaving for Great Lakes next month. Hope all is well.

Thanks for asking Mari. Unfortunately, I did hear from my son yesterday (a message on my answer machine) and he's been sent to Ship 17 for a medical discharge, after 2 weeks of BC. Kevin said he can go back in later, but from what I've heard that's not really the case. I'm freaking out not knowing what's going on, but thanks to the wonderful people here, I am learning things that I can do under the circumstances. Best of luck to your son! What is he going into?

Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately, it's too late now. I guess we should have done our homework earlier, and not have relied upon the recruiter so much. Oh well, live and learn...
