being prior service of the united states navy to help out the parents about holiday leave. this is normally how it works out if your child is in boot camp they do not get to leave for the holiday ie. chirstmas or new years. if they are in a "A" school or "C" school they normally cut the students and staff in half and let them have either one or the other holiday off, but not booth. if they graduate boot camp during the holiday leave period they sometimes place the students on leave till the current leave period is over. this is normally frowned apon because it ends up placing the person in the negative as far as leave goes. the military personnel get 2.5 days leave per month of being in the service those giving them 30days per year. I hope this helps out all that are wondering about the leave policey.

sincerly yours

What do you know about distance in miles that they are allowed to travel while on leave. Can they travel 220 miles to their home?

I can only speak for Nuke C school in NY....
My son just heard that they will still be on a training stay so since they will miss their graduation dates, it will be treated like they are still in school. Off 12/22-12/27 or 12/28-1/2/09. He said they wont know for sure of that, or what week they will have till the beginning of Dec.

It all depends on the individual command. My daughter is in San Diego and she has a totally different schedule from those mentioned here. You probably just need to speak to your sailor and find out. Leave dates for specific commands should probably not be posted online as this could be a security breach as outlined in previous threads.

As others have said, it varies by location and rank. My son is stationed in Norfolk. He was an E2 last year at Christmas. His group was allowed a week off. He said the higher ranks and guys with families had Christmas week. Lower rank single guys like him had New Year's. My computer crashed since then so I can't give you the exact days. Your sailor will know first and probably call you within minutes of knowing the exact dates. :) Get out your credit card - they always need airfare.

PS, it would be great to see this kind of information compiled in an easy to read space/format. Thanks, CC, for doing that!

As stated by others it is very dependant on the command Leave Policy, each command generates one prior to Holiday Leave periods. I have seen some school commands allow all students take leave over the holidays usually starting a few days prior to Christmas and ending a couple of days after New Years. As someone stated before most commands do not allow new Sailors to go in the hole with there leave days. Each command developes the leave period to allow as many folks as possible to take leave, while still being able to meet commands operational needs.

Nick is in C school (I guess) and he'll be home 12/22-1/03.

I was talking to my husband about it, and he said that they vary from command to command, and that EACH individual sailor is different and could have different leave times, so until you actually hear from your sailor nothing is really set. Like I told my hubby about some stuff, and he kinda got mad bc of all the info I get from the site, b/c I get my hopes up thinking that it will be a certain way b/c a bunch of other ppl had it that way when in all reality all sailors are differnt and he said that 95% of the time if I hear something from someone or anything about it in general that it more than likley wont happen that way, he says that, that was their individual sailor, and that everything changes with everyone. He actually doesnt liek me to go on this site too much anymore b/c I ask him about stuff and he says that it is completley different then what I hear. So i d k, he likes that I have support, but he doesnt like when I hear thngs and hope for things that wont happen b/c I hear about it from someone else and not him since it isn't 100% set in stone unless it comes from him. he doesn't like to see me get my hopes up and let down could ya tell? haha.. Like most sailors get a few days off for Thanksgiving as well, My hubby can't do anything for Thanksgiving, b/c he has Duty on Thanksgiving Day. Ugh.. The not knowing sucks, but I realized that even talking to other people about stuff, I still don't know what I need to. = (

Tanya, that's a very valuable viewpoint ... what's true for one sailor is not true for another.

I had years when I had duty over Thanksgiving, and years when I had four days off, even managed to take leave once or twice. I remember eating turkey in the chow hall, I had no place I could go that year. That particular base allowed the families to eat with their sailor, it was wonderful to see the kids getting to eat "Navy food" like Mommy or Daddy. Even the sailors on duty (but not on watch) got a Thanksgiving meal with loved ones, and made us lonely ones smile in the process. (yes, they had to pay, but it isn't expensive). But like Tanya said, what's true one place may not be correct in another.

Navy wives, and moms and girlfriends and even kids, quickly learn flexibility, patience and to keep their sense of humor lively. Or, only your sailor knows for sure.

Sorry, off the soapbox now ... Happy Holidays to all, no matter when you actually get to celebrate them!

i think it varies. around christmas my son last year only had a week he did not come home same this year when holidays come up and sailors leave on leave they may go for two weeks i think thats the limit and it depends on there duty watch evans will go from 6 day watch down to 3 day watch on christmas then the week after christmas he has a week off with plane fares being so high and a short time off he once again will stay in norfolk and it all depends how long you have been in but i think two weeks is the time limit, and i now they take turns with leave per ship it is hard to figure out that for sure i just hold my breathe till i see him in front of me. hope this helped

I don't believe holidays such as Christmas Day or New Years day work the same as they to in the civilian world. I don't think the Navy differentiates between a "holiday" or a regular day, they are all regular days. My son has turned in his leave CHIT for the holidays and all 11 days will count as regular days against his accrued leave, even though 2 of them are national holidays.
