Can someone please tell me what their experience has been with a son/daughter who has deployed for few months via ship? How long does it take to hear from them?

Hi Anti, This is a good question. As I never know when my son is at sea or not for the most part. Have a nice day. Lesli

My son has been doing short cruises thus far and I was shocked when I saw him on Facebook one day. I just knew it wouldn't be allowed, but I was wrong. It made me feel better to be able to reach out to him. I truly hope this continues to be allowed, but will understand if the day comes that it isn't.

I know the Navy allows Facebook and Twitter, but the Marines do not.

And thanks, Leslie, that's good OPSEC there!

I can find out, I'm just waiting on the time difference.

Sailors can access Facebook on a limited basis when the ship is deployed. Much of the time it will not be accessible. In fact, all e-mail may be down if the ship is in a sensitive area. Also, internet access can be sketchy depending on where in the world the ship is ... the entire website was down for a few weeks when the USS Ronald Reagan was out.

Michelle, I have 2 sons in the Navy. Both have been on deployment. I think the longest I did not have any communication was 2-3 weeks. I would send them e-mails written like a journal/log updating them on what was going on at home. Both said that it was nice to read the updates, when they were off duty and able to have computer time. They could not always respond immediately, but on average I think it was about once a week they were able to write.

Hi Beth,

That is a good idea. It's like writing them letters by email. Thanks for the info... I have also been receiving emails by cell phone which has been good. But he only answers a certain amount of my questions at a time. I guess they have to take turns on the internet.

Hi Michelle, Do not take it personally that you do not get return e-mails as much as you like to. I used to.

Thanks Lesli - you're right! I do not take it personal at all. Since I've been on this website, I am totally beginning to understand a lot of things. Maybe i will hear from him tonite. His emails usually comes through on my cell phone as a text around 3 to 6 am. I make sure that the sound is up on my phone so I can always hear him.
