My son will be leaving A school for Little Creek, VA, soon. He wants his car right away, but we'd like him to see what the area is like first. We're planning on driving it out in March. The other issue is when his ship goes out. I don't want the car sitting somewhere for months. Have any of you had these issues? Thanks, Valley

Is this his car or your car? If it's his, he's an adult now, and is probably capable of figuring out storage issues himself. If it's yours, tell him to go buy a car if he feels he needs one.

My hubby, who was stationed there, says YES. He says life is easier, and safer, with a car. Walking around outside a Navy base is risky. Sailors are mugging targets.

The bigger question is will the school ALLOW him to have a car right away?

His ship? he's not yet through A school I wouldn't worry about deployments quite yet. Still, thousands of sailors sort out the storage issue.

He can do without it until March, that won't be as big an issue as they (our sons, mine included) like to think it is. That said, it's not a pedestrian area as much as around some bases, but then again, he'll be busy with school and can sign up for the MWR events/trips they hold for single sailors. There also is bus service, if he needs to 'get away' on the weekend to the beach.

Thanks for the info. I'm just beginning to research the area for transportation information and things (in general) to do for fun. Patrick is a big history buff and will be close to many things "historical" in that area. Valley

It's his car. He bought it last year when his ship date for boot camp was scheduled for this coming March. One week after signing the papers on the car, his recuiter called and told him he was leaving in one week, instead of 7 months. His brother and I will be driving it out in March. It should be a fun trip because we'll get to spend time with Patrick. I guess I'll let him worry about the rest.

The way I am reading it is his first duty station is in Little Creek VA. Having been stationed there before I would say yes he needs the car! That is one of the nicer bases in VA and is a somewhat safer base right outside the base, but there is nothing right outside that base.

As far as storage issues for the car, don't worry about that. When a Ship gets ready to deploy they tell the Sailors where they can store their car (at the Sailor's expense.)

Below is the base website.
