Navy For Moms

Good Morning,
My son will be leaving for boot camp Jan 4 , 2010. I know they get all kinds of vaccinations when they get there but should he get a flu shot now. We have a lot of people sick around us. Would he have to show paperwork proving he got one? Thanks for all your help. Sean's recruiter isn't very helpful.

I did not read this - but you might want to. It is all about the flu (H1N1) shot.
If it was me - I would not get the shot. Although I have (1) never gotten it (I leave it for the high risk people) and (2) I have never gotten the flu (even though I work in a high school).

Thank you for your reply. Sean's recruiter always says he'll get back to us and we don't hear from him.I'm glad our sons will be home for the holidays.
Thanks again,

The Navy will immunize him, don't get it beforehand. They tend to get sick in boot camp anyway.

I'd get it if it were available, but then, I'm high risk. I get the seasonal shot too. Hasn't affected me adversely so far. The bubonic plague shot, that one kicked my ass for a few days. Seriously, I've had a plague shot.

Since there is a good chance of him getting the flu in the next two months and setting him back in preparing for boot camp, I would get it for him now. It won't really start working to protect him for a couple of weeks, though. Getting the flu right before leaving could really cause problems.

He will get it again in boot camp, proof of already having it or not. As your doctor if he thinks it will be a problem if he gets another in early January. Sometimes getting two too close together actually reduces the vaccine's effectiveness.

I was thinking the same thing. I will call the doctor and ask him what we should do. I would think the Navy would want people to have flu shots before they start bootcamp.
Thanks for your help,
