Navy For Moms

When my Sailor deployed on the USS Devastator to the Med Sea in 2003, I was involved with the FRG. I was given some information of his ship's locations and then was given enough time to be there when his ship returned to port. What has happened to the FRGs? In all of the comments, I haven't seen any mention of FRGs.

Hi Karen, I just went on google and put in Family Readiness Group and a bunch popped up. My son is still in A school for aviation mechanics but I would like to find out more information on this group.

Hi Karen.. I am glad you posted this.. I am part of an Army mom's forum too and they told me to contact the FRG about the discrepency in my sons leave... I had no idea what they were and my husband who is retired Airforce didnt either..

So thanks atleast I learned something tonight...

I'm not sure what the FRG is going to do about a discrepancy in your son's leave? He should contact his personnel department, they'll tell him what needs to be done. He has to take care of it, there is nothing you can do.

The FRG is mainly an Army term. The Navy traditionally has used the term Family Support Group, which is manned by volunteer spouses of the ship. The ship's ombudsman is your primary point of contact when you need information or a source of help.

Yes my son explained it to me ... I dont know why they would direct me there because I knew there was nothing I can do, I was on my Army board just venting about the mix up... Apparently its been taken care of now as of yesterday :)

I have decided I am not even going to try to get all the different terms/rules/etc straight... It took me forever to understand the Airforce and then the boys go in two seperate branches of military... So I figure I will just throw in the towel...

LOL--you'd think by now they'd make things the same across the board for us poor moms, huh? I'm glad to hear his pay has been fixed.

Sorry about the initials mix-up--I have an Army son as well who was also deployed to Iraq in 2003. I went on line to the USS Decatur's official Navy website--www.decatur.navy.mil and at the bottom of the first screen was the notice of the new Friends & Family website. I also went to the links tab and looked at the www.news.navy.mil and got to read about my son's return to port yesterday and the official release of what their fleet group accomplished during the deployment. So much has changed since 2003-2004 as far as information being released in real time and our Sailors can't tell us about all of their experiences even when they return. The FSG, F&F, and the Navy News will release what our Sailors can talk about. All of my sons have talked about being career military and the last thing I want to do ask them about non-public events, information, etc. So, I got my question answered and maybe this will help you as well. Happy Thanksgiving to your and your families!!

Every ship has one, if you can't find it, go to the internet, look up what ever ship or command you have someone on. Somewhere on the site there will be ombudsman information, email them, they will get you the information. Anyone with a kid in the military should make sure that they are aware of the job of the ombudsman, the red cross, the FRG and any organization that is there to support military families in time of need.
