GED and enlistment

My son-in-law just took his GED and is trying to join the Navy but his recruiter is not very helpful. He scored 77 on his ASVAB. The recruiter told him that he cannot go to MEPS till he actually receives the GED diploma and then will have to wait a minimum of 90 days before leaving for bootcamp because of the GED. Is this true? Can he not go to MEPS and signup under the DEP program contingent on him receiving his GED? Also, why the 90 day wait. Lastly, he was told that March is the only time GED applicants will be considered and that is limited. Thank you for all replies.

The Navy only allows 5-10% of the people who join to have GED's.

Mona, your questions was answered in the Q&A with a recruiter by Brady. Your son in law must have the physical GED papers in hand before he can go to MEPS. Go and check out Brady's answer.

Hi Mona,

My son had his GED Diploma in June when he signed all his paperwork. He had to wait 6 months though! Not sure why they wait. He went to BC on 12/11. He PIR on 2/6. It went by pretty fast. Now he's off to A school. Not much help but that was my experience.
