Graduation of A school and Pinning
My son graduates A school he thinks sometime before March 16th in Great Lakes. He says the graduation itself is not worth a flight to Great Lakes...we live in Virginia. He said there is a pinning that is always done on the 16th of each month. He"s thinking that is when his pinning will happen March 16th. That is a Saturday. Is it ALWAYS on the 16th?? What happens during a pinning?? He says he gets to choose who places his pins. He chose me and his dad:). Anyone have any info??

From my experience, but that is a different rating than your Sailor's (FC), your Sailor is mistaken. The pinning, where the Sailor receives his rating badge, happens as part of the "A" School graduation and yes, the Sailor can choose the person to pin it on. I just did a search and checked in the group for your Sailor's rating, AECF - FCs and ETs, and it appears to be the same for FC.
The graduation ceremony from "A" School and "C" School for most ratings is about 30 minutes long, if that, and often there are not very many family members who attend (5 or less is very common across the ratings and some classes have no loved ones in attendance) because the Sailor often goes home that day or the next and many don't see a need to spend the money or take time off for another trip. I was unable to make it to my Sailor's "A" School graduation, but 3 1/2 years later I was able to make it for his "C" School graduation, which was doubly special because his frocking for MA2 immediately followed the "C" School graduation ceremony. The two ceremonies were completed in about 35 minutes and that even included slowing things down so that I could get pictures of both (as he received his certificate and as he was frocked) and for the four or five other loved ones of other graduates to get their pictures as their loved one receieved his/her certificate.
For "A" School, the graduates receive their certificates (and if there is a loved one there, they make sure s/he can get a photo of his/her Sailor receiving the certiicate and shaking hands) and then the Sailors can pick someone to pin on the rating badges. I know that is how it is for MA's and I have heard it's pretty much the same for other ratings as well and my search showed it to be that way as well. Post in your group to get an answer from someone who has recently attended and see what they have to say about the FC "A" School graduation and pinning and when it will occur.

I need to clarify something. The FC rating badge is sewn on prior to "A" School graduation as is the MA rating badge. MA's receive their shields (badges) identifying them as military police officers at their "A" School graduation. I have seen where those getting wings can choose the person to pin those on. It appears that an FC would not have a pin of that sort on their uniforms and therefore would not be able to choose who to pin it on.

Thanks for clarifying that.
For those who may not know, frocking is the ceremony in which a Sailor is recognized as having attained the rate of E-4 or above and receives the collar devices. Those selected for promotion to the next higher grade may be allowed to be "frocked" and wear the rate/rank devices of this higher grade. They are NOT entitled to pay, but are accorded the courtesies of that grade. This happens for E-4 and above and officers.

Thanks for the info!! We are thinking he will not be able to come home afterwards because from what I have read and what he has heard FC's are usually in hold status for up to several months after they graduate awaiting a spot for C school. (AEGIS) Does that sound correct? Lemonelephant, you are right on the expense...if there is any possibility he would come home a day or so after, we would rather just see him at home. Will he know beforehand if there is a good chance he will be on hold vs. transferring to C school soon after?

Check in your group about what happens after "A" School for FC's and perhaps TSC GL Public Affairs Office will post as well. It is possible that he would go straight to "C" School after "A" School and not have leave or as you say, he could be on hold waiting to class up for "C" School.
