My husband wears a Retired Navy ballcap. He is thanked frequently, especially in truckstops. If I am standing there, sometimes he remembers to tell them I served too. LOL.

At my job, most of our regular customers know about my son being a Sailor. They have been asking about him since before he shipped off to BC in October, and they still ask about him whenever they come in. Many of them are retired or active military, so they have thanked me many times for being a Navy Mom, and have sent many thank you's and good wishes to my son. When we had him for liberty after his PIR, he (and we) were stopped for handshakes and thank you's all over Chicago, it was so cool :) One anonymous person even bought his Thanksgiving dinner as a "thank you for serving" - blew us away and made for a memorable holiday.

Love having other folks proud of my son, too, and it helps me remember to spread that pride around to other military folks that I see day to day :)

I wear my Navy hat all the time and when my son who was visiting me was here he was admiring the Harley Davidsons. I have a friend that I asked if he could take my son out on a ride....He swiftly got up and hugged me stating anything for you darlin' *Did I mention that NO ONE ever lets anyone drive their bikes*? I noticed that he had left, wondered where he had gone and within minutes he was handing my son the keys.... OMG I thought... My son jumped on the bike with pride that day... took it out and came back with a great big... "I WANT ONE"!!

Later on, I was approached by my friend Martin. He said... "From one fellow military brother to you, my fellow Navy sister.... you do us proud... your daughters do us proud... your family serves with honour... its the least I could do to show my gratitude" Come to find out.... my son is the first person to EVER ride his bike other than himself. All of the Vets that day noted that this had occurred... I was astonished that they all came up to me and gave me lovin' and thanks like crazy, thanking me profusely for all my family had done and telling me to thank my loved ones for doing what they had done for years. That afternoon, my son and I were there sitting on the deck... Martin came up and gave me a hug, then said stay still... kissed my Navy hat and said wear it with pride for ever! I do... and you know, more ppl Do comment on the possitive than the negative. It gives them reason to come talk to me. It shows unity for those of us that are not active military or are still... I WEAR IT WITH PRIDE! That is a positive all around. These are the pics taken that day.

Semper Fi do or die! Oohh Rahh! My Dad served 3 tours in the Vietnam war and he's a proud Marine! My Dad carried around a Zippo lighter during the war. He had every year he was there engraved on one side and on the other it says, at home my wife waits for me with love in her heart and tears in her eyes. He gave that lighter to me and it's priceless.

I work at the aquarium in Myrtle Beach, SC. And when we teach our Shark Attack class we talk about the USS Indianapolis. I was teaching it one day and noticed that a family was smiling and looked very touched. After the class ended they came up to me and the little boy said my mommy's great uncle was on the boat and he was one of the 316 men that was saved! I just smiled at him and than thanked the family for his service. He is still alive today and I was told that all the survivors get together once a year and do something. I just thought that was really amazing.

I am very proud of my boyfriend who is going through OCS!

Hi Rena! My name is Karen and my son starts his journey on July 13. I wanted to respond to your question.
I was switching my phone service to Verizon and during the process, the representative asked if I had any children and how old, etc. I told him my son was 17 and was entering the Navy and the representative asked me to make sure I told my son "Thank You" for what he was doing.
That really was unexpected and meant alot.

Heart warming..... I have had that happen too.... many times on the phone with various representatives. This is kind of funny... I was driving to get my youngest one last year. I parked and got her. While I was getting back into the car I noticed this man jogging... OMG *did I say perfectly gorgeous adonis*? haha...

He noticed my two window tags one stating support our troops with a ribbon and the other clearly NAVY.
He stopped and talked to me about it. I told him that I was from a long line of military family members and that my one daughter at the time was deployed for at the time her third deployment. He then filled me in that he had been Navy and more info on that. He told me to thank my daughter and thanked me as well as commented on my father who became an American and then was drafted within 10 days of taking his oath and proudly served this country.

I went to leave after this nice talk and he started to jog again. As I was going around the block, I saw him again. He flagged me down and I stopped. He proceeded to ask me out. I was stunned.

We never did go out like that but I have a group of Navy friends now and he goes out with us monthly to just talk and be supportive of one another... share stories etc.

If I had not met him we would not have formed this group. Sometimes ppl are really wonderful.... and it IS truly heart warming.

Rena Alegria: 4 years ago, when my son joined the Navy, we did a dinner for him with the whole family and friends. When my husband told one of his coworkers about it, he offered his catering service, at no cost, just because my son will be serving the country! He said that for him was an honor and he wanted to show his appreciation. We were and we are so proud of our son!

I think that so many people have positive things to add... helps those of us left here at home with loved ones doing an honourable job... for all of us! Thank you for sharing! That is great....

I can't top the Harley story, but I like to wear my Navy gear out in public when ever I can, and even at the store, people ask me if I'm retired Navy. I am not, but when I tell them my son is serving, they just always say, tell him thanks, and good hunting, and good luck. It's always fun when it's an ex-Navy guy or gal. It's like another part of my family. After his PIR, we went to see a movie at the big mall, and a family purchased his ticket for him and the lady gave him a big hug and just said thank you. It's great being a Navy dad!
