One of my son’s first experiences as a new recruit happened while walking through the airport traveling from Chicago to New London, CT. He had just graduated from basic and was on his way to A-School, and traveling with a handful of other fresh recruits. All the men were in their dress blues. My son called us afterwards and said he was overwhelmed by the friendly and supportive comments they all got from the civilian travelers. He told us that he personally got many hand shakes and a “Thank you for serving”. A nice reward after basic! Go Navy!

A few years ago, my 3 yr old grandson and I came out of the grocery store and found an older man waiting for us at the back of my car. He had seen the "Proud Parent of a Sailor" and "Silent Service" stickers and magnets on my car. He was retired Navy who had also served on a sub. My little grandson looked at him with awe and said "Do you know my daddy? He is on the submarine." The man got down to my grandson's level, looked him in the eye and said that he had never had the pleasure of meeting his daddy but the next time we saw him to please give him a great big thank you from him and to tell him how proud he is of all the soldiers. When my grandson told him that his daddy was a sailor not a soldier, the man said something like "Oh he is a soldier that gets to ride in submarines instead of tanks." That was when my grandson started to realize that his daddy was something special and not just "Living in the Navy" like he always told people.

Hi Everyone! When my daughter graduated bootcamp (over 3 years ago), she was waiting at the airport (in Chicago) to fly to "A" school in Pensacola. While waiting in her dress whites at the gate, she was approached by an Airline Service Representative. She stated that a gentlemen wanted to give up his First Class seat to her in exchange for her seat. He wanted to show his gratitude for our young sailors and their service to Our Country! My daughter and our family will never forget this kind gesture! God Bless our HEROS!

That was so sweet. When my husband and I were flying out of O'Hare after PIR weekend we were bumped up to first class for the flight home. We were shocked! Of course I was covered from head to toe in my Navy Mom stuff I had bought at the exchange.

I just came back from visiting my sailor in Virginia. On the airplane coming home before take off the steward came down the aisle asking everyone *active military* Finally one boy raised his hand and the steward said we have a seat for you in first class if you would like. The young man got up and went. (of course I clapped )
My son was first classed twice since he has been in. I believe this has become a common practice with airlines - or - if not IT SHOULD BE !!

Ummm 100% in ----- that will not do !! Our children will get the respect they deserve from PDX. Now when you say this you are talking an *active* military and on orders correct ? Not just vacationing military correct !! That matters a bunch , also where did you hear this info from ?
You know me I would be all over this if need be ~~ and that is NEVER good when I get involved. I would swim the ocean for our military. lol lol lol lol

OMG I moved from OREGON and both my daughters came from there... I AM IN ON CALLING AND RAISING HOLY CAIN! SHEEESHH! NOT OKAY! WILL POST THE PHONE NO. IF NO ONE ELSE DOES! I am personally outraged at that... there is NO REASON that our troops and those that give so much with them cannot say goodbye to eachother... WAY WRONG... how about calling I believe it is KATU television station? KOIN? PERHAPS all of them... in Portland?

PLS POST PHONE NO.'s as soon as you have them for all to note and call on if they want to!~

Ok I got the info here ~~
PDX does indeed let you go to the gate for or with your military family member.
What this happen to be about was a mother not being able to go to gate and see her recruit off. MEPS said no --- not PDX
they do not allow you to take your child to airport here in portland either. Once they sign the contract they are recruits and I assume they dont wish the parents there making it any harder then it has to be. They wish for you to say goodbye at MEPS.

As for all other welcome homes or goodbye's if your service member is active and has orders or coming home you can get a pass to the gate !
