Well, this sure makes me cry! Molly and other moms, that is so great about the military getting upgraded to 1st class. Wow.
My nickname is Sue-pillowcase lady. I joined Molly's adopt a sailor group last fall. In January, I decided that I wanted to do patriotic pillowcases to our groups.
I put out a plea to family and friends for help. and the response has been tremendous. I won't go into it all here. Check out my page and/or the group for pictures and details.

But I want to share this. A friend wrote up alittle thing that I emailed to my contacts, who in turn have emailed to theirs. Our project is called "heads at ease". I have been getting $1.00 bills in the mail from all over the country to help pay for the fabric and shipping. I believe people really do want to support our troops, but just don't know what to do.

almost every envelope carries a message to thanks also.

When we went to my son's PIR on 3/20, we went to Navy Pier. So many people came up to my son and his friend to shake their hands and congratulate and thank them. It was incredible. We were so proud of them. It made them feel really great, also. I have an even better story. On Sunday, after we had flown home, my son and a bunch of other sailors went back to Navy Pier. They ate lunch there and a man came over to their table and not only paid the bill but thanked and congratulated each and every one of them. Then, a few minutes later, another man also tried to pay the bill. They said thank you anyway, but someone else just took care of it. The bill was almost three hundred dollars. Amazing, isn't it. My son was so surprised. It made him feel great that people do appreciate them.

When my son flew home in December he was also bumped up to first class!! When he went to a football game in November in Seattle, he and his friends were treated with class and respect. They had people buy them drinks and food, and also got bumped to better seats. I also think America wants to support our troops!!

Ask the Cookbook group moms and how to publish ~~~ god bless them they did a N4M cookbook and then sold it and with the proceeds donated it to our adopt a sailor project. Which we to this day use monthly for our adopted group of the month !!

Not to change gears here BUT just to drop some what Navy Moms here on N4M have done for our military. these are only i few I personally know
Remember that we are all strangers at first.
I know a mom who drove 4 hours to pick up a sailor stranded at a airport and took her home for days just to bring her back to catch a flight.
I know a mom that fly cross country to be with a mom who had lost her sailor to a accident, never speaking to her once before that.
I know a mom that faithfully every month makes pillowcases for a different group of sailors. (groups can range into the 100)
I know many moms that helped a young man drive across country, AFTER his car broke down. And day after day they transfered this kiddo from car to car until he reached his new duty (GL to SD) that is 100's of miles.

God bless our military and god bless their moms !!

WOW... I especially like the one about all the moms travelling across country, taking the young sailor from destination to destination... That is very special. There are MANY MANY PEOPLE that would do these things. We do have a unique group of people here. All tied together by a very integral part of our life.. Military and Loved Ones. Although we may not know each other... we share that bond. One again... Due tp Opsec we need to be aware that we don't know each other... it is good to band together.. but beware of those that are not what they say!

Truly,

Alegria

P.S. Can't wait to hear more stories! Thanks to all of you!

Just a note Alegria - in order to publish anything on here you should probably consult with the other moms who have commented. We as an agency cannot legally assist with this, but I wanted you to be aware.

I work part time in a restarant, anyone in uniform gets half off their meal plus a big thank-you for thier service. I also have a " son is serving" bumper sticker, and get thumbs up from a lot of other drivers.

I play WOW (World of Warcraft) and numerous people thank me and my son for serving. They are amazed at the soldier/sailor's dedication to our country. I say thank you and ask that they remember them in prayers Also, let them know that one member of every generation from my family has served since the Civil War. I encourage them to look into their history and learn about their own family's military experience. Some have messaged me saying that they never knew their uncle/aunt was in the military. It is an eye opener for a lot of people.

My parents make sure that everytime they see a man or woman in a military uniform to thank them for their service to our country. Also, my dad recently retired from the Air Force and when he wears his retired AF hat or BDU jacket he hears a lot of thanks.

Kind of a different story, but one that makes me smile. My Navy son and his good friend were NOT in uniform in Japan out away from the base. They were in an area where it was obviouse that they were Americans and they were the only non-natives around watching a drum ceremony. A little boy about 5 years old came over to practice his English. My son said the boy was very shy. The boy left and maybe got some encouragement from his mom to keep trying. The little ambassador came back and told our boys as much as he could in his limited English about the significance of the ceremony they were watching. He and his family were on a day outing with homemade lunches. The little boy shared his cookies with the American sailors. I just think its amazing how the Navy and our sailors represent all of us in far off parts of the world. Its so charming that a little boy offered his treats to make them feel a part of his world.

Thats a nice story Beth ~ yes they are ambassadors and are also held to a higher standard because of that. I always tell my sailor you represent us all when you walk around. I think that is one reason they are taught to stand tall, sit straight. Have good posture and good hygene. they always say Yes Maam, Please and Thank you.
And look at what our sailors get to experiance ! That was very cute of that little boy sharing his cookies :)
