we want to join the American Leagin plus with our son being in the navy it will help me deal with my seperation from him I miss him so much he is my youngest. he just finished A school which was in mississippi where he was 10 hrs. away & leaves for virgina on tuesday & I dont know when I will be able to see him. so I thought this would give me something to do. my father & father inlaw both were in the service my dad was in the navy what years im not sure nor can I find out because he is an angel & also is my father in law. & he was in the national gaurds how can I find out when. & where to get a copy of there papers. if any one can help me please do my email is vmintona@yahoo.com thank you

how can we join the american legion if we, ourselves, have not served in the armed forces?

I went to a graduation party there & talked to someone about it & he told me if my or my husband were in the service we can join we just need a copy of there papers. if not I can find out about other family members cause first I asked cause of my son being in there now if we could join then he asked about our parents

You may want to try Ancestry.com - I was previously able to find my grandfather's draft card for WW2 - I just tried logging onto their site again but now they want me to pay for a monthly subscription... NOT.

Someone should have a copy of your father's DD214 (separation papers). If not you can try to obtain them from the National Archives. http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-servi...

You will need a copy to prove your eligibility and will then be allowed to join as a daughter of the Legion in the American Legion Auxillary, not the American Legion, which is only for vets and active duty military.
