Navy For Moms

Hi Navy For Moms,

I am going into the Navy's Nuclear program and I just have a question that I am 'iffy' about. Will the courses I will be taking at NNPTC and beyond transfer over as college credits at a University? I've asked my recruiters and they said that it does but reading on other sites from former NUKES they said that because the training is classified it doesn't. Any information towards this is greatly appreciated and thank you for taking your time to read this.

Not sure if you rec'd your answer yet, but best place to get this info is in the nuke group. From what we've found out, some of the 77 nuke credits are transferable at certain universities. They do have the universities listed in some of the materials you probably have rec'd from your recruiter. But yes, most definitely, some are transferable. Not all, because although these courses are tough, they are nowhere near as tough as an actual nuclear engineering degree from a university.

Thank you! I'll have to ask him again.

My husband is a nuke. Its actually very minimal credits you get. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Power_School

You can read on there the credits you get. Recruiters lied to my husband and told him he'd be very close to a degree which is not true at all. And only if you attend 3 certain colleges, I'm not even sure they're actual accredited colleges, do you get the 77 credits. You want a degree from an accredited university :)

Yeah... My recruiter told me "After all the schooling you'll only need 3 more credits and you'll have your BS Degree". This is very disappointing to hear but I'm glad you replied. It was better to hear it now than to experience it myself. Thank you Lisa!

Yes, recruiters like recruiting Nukes because they get an extra 'credit' for bringing a nuke into the navy. They get 2 credits for a nuke as opposed to 1 for a regular job. My husband's recruiter was a nuke and told him that. The GOOD NEWS is that once you're through the nuke program, you can start to take CLEP tests toward credits. So while the program won't give you credit toward an advanced chemistry class, the navy will pay for you to CLEP out of the class since you have that knowledge. Make sure and visit the college office on base as much as you can and get all the information you can. Be proactive about your education and take every opportunity to continue your education while enlisted so as to not exhaust your GI bill and to make the most of your career and time.

Thanks very much for the wise words! This will definitely ease my transition into the Navy world. I will definitely do this.

My husband did get college credit for his Nuke school, you just have to look for the right college. He was able to get his BS while in the Navy (night school). Once done with your Navy career, please consider working for the Nuclear Power Industry. They need more people and the pay is great!

Yeah I've heard a lot of great job opportunities for Nukes after the Navy. It is definitely in my mind to pursue it. Thanks for your contribution it is much appreciated!
