My sons ship is being comissioned later this year. I am sure this is a pretty formal affair but I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me what the attire will be?

USS Makin Island

There may be recommendations for attire with your tickets, but here is my advice: Since your Sailor will be in Full Dress Uniform, the fanciest rig in a typical sea bag, it is not asking too much for guests to wear something a little special too. This is a big deal for the commissioning crew. Show some respect for the plankowner's efforts.

I don't have tickets yet so am asking for a little info ahead of time. I understand this is huge and is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was just curious about what to expect.

Thanks for the info

You can expect some people in t-shirts/shorts/flip-flops, others in business attire and everything in between.
I've been to two commissionings: One in Texas in June and the other in Maine in December. Seen the entire fashion spectrum. Good taste and bad. The Fashion Police were not on duty at either commissioning.

I would never disrespect my son after all of his hard work. He has had 3 promotions and is doing great. I figured a nice dress would do just fine but certainly have never been to one and wanted so idea so I have plenty to find something.

I am so excited. I will be spending 9 days with him and his wife and I think we are going to have a great time.

Does anyone know what the tickets our sailors get us for the commissioning allow us to do? Just attend the ceremony, go aboard, breakfast, etc? Our son is on the Makin Island and we are just wondering/thinking we might like to make a contribution.

I have no idea but I'm not sure what everything is. There is a website http://lhd8commissioning.com. There is some information there. I am not sure it will tell all you want to know.

I am sorry I don't remember if I replied to you, Donna. I went to the comissioning and was in San Diego 9 days. I went out on the day cruise...were you there?? I guess we should have tried harder to get us Navy4Moms together but I also know my time with Jordan was precious. May I ask what your son's name is?? or you can send me a message telling me. It amazed me how many of the guys and ladies seem to know each other. Jordan also goes all over the ship doing inspections and repairs and damage assessments so he meets so many people. I was just thinking our sons may know each other.
I hope you and your son and family are doing well.

Terry a nice dress would be good but something to think about if you are able to tour and go on the ship you may want to think about a nice pants suit. Going across walkways or down the stairs will allow for modesty for you. Also think about is it outside or inside and the time of day as well. Winds can make your unmentionables mentionable. Don't know if you want to repeat Marilyn Monroe on the air vent. this is an exciting time enjoy.
