When they fail to pass their final PFA, they are sent to the FIT Division (lower part of Ship 06) and given more chances to try before their PIR. If they do not pass by then, they will be given a chance to try at least once every other day. A commanding officer will work with him to shave the time off his run. He will be assigned to another Div once he passes. This could be in a few days or a few weeks, it's really up to him and his efforts.

How many seconds does he need to reduce his time by? Don't worry, this is just a temporary bump in the road. Unfortunately, it is costly and stressful for the family waiting for news back home! This is why we often recommend purchasing refundable or exchangeable plane tickets (or insurance) for PIR. Rest easy, they do not discharge them for failing a run. He will get it and move on. He may elect not to participate in the graduation ceremony with his new Div. They often just want to get on with it and move to their "A" school, the next stage of training. There is a Group for Moms on N4M who find themselves in this situation. You will find great support from Lana the creator of it (and other Moms) and probably more answers as you wait for him to succeed:

Good Luck to him and God Bless! :-)
