My son is enlisting in a couple of hours. He has all these great hopes and dreams form listening to the recurter. Did any other son or daughters not get into where or what field they were promised? How much am I to believe will be true. ?

Hi Jodi,
The navy does honor their promise to give them a job in the area they requested. But just as mentioned by other Mom's your son will need to study and pass what ever schooling he is assigned to. Also he will need to keep his record CLEAN, no disciplinary action!!
The higher the grades in post boot camp schooling the better the job/location he is assigned to. Also, your son needs to make sure that he speaks up when assignments come up; that will help him get what he wants.
When my son graduated from A school they gave him orders to a ship responsible for a non Aegis weapon. He went back and asked if he could be considered for C school for Aegis weapons. He was then reassigned and went to C school in Virginia. So speaking up and explaining his desires and career plan will help.
Good luck. For help during Boot Camp don't be afraid to ask questions.

If it is in his contract he is due it. If it was just word of mouth, of course will not get it.

Aimee, My son is a DEP and is to go to boot camp Jan 22, 2009 and then on to be a corpsman. Was your son really offered a sign on bonus as a DEP for corpsman? Max also wants to do the Fleet Marine is that a possibility at this time or was it just a "recruiters promise"

My son joined the Navy Feb. 2008. My son asked the recurter to come to our home because we had many question. He anwsered all of them. My son tested will enough to go into the field he wanted and he just finished his schooling as an AE. What could happen to someone not getting into the field they want is if they fail out of there schooling. I can tell you this, my son is very proud of himself and is so glad he is a Navel Airman.

My son got what he signed up for, but the bonus money took almost a year to get to him and they took out 28% in taxes right off the top. He spent it all in Spain the first month out on deployment. Make sure he knows what he's getting into before he signs. I think he can bring the paperwork home with him to review before signing. He can probably request changes if it isn't exactly what he wants.

yes he can speaking of which bc i was signed up for a program that i thoght was a nuke program but when i looked at the contact and took it home to review i was actually signed up to be a convetional mechanic and this did not give me the bonjus i wanted so i brought it back and told them i wasnt signing until they made some changes in it and gave them the changes within 1&1/2 weeks i had the changes in it and was headed for boot so just be patient and dont settle just go for what u want and trust me you will get it.

PS if going nuke dont let them get u to sign with out a bonus of atleast 10,000 bc i talked to friends in boot camp that settled for 7.5 for their sign on bonus as nukes and i can tell u thats not the way to go if u stick to your guns they are athorized to give you up to 15,000 for a scoe of over 87 on your asfab and if you score above 93 then you can get 20,000 for a nuke bonus so dont which is what i got so dont settle for less than 10 for sure bc if u do u are letting them get the better of you

Shipmate: Enlistment bonuses constantly change! Unless you have the latest instruction in front of you, do NOT tell people what someone is authroized to do. Can you give me the hyperlink to the instruciton you are talking about? Or are you just talking about "what you heard"?

well i dont have the hyperlink all i can tell u is i did RAP within the last 2 weeks and thats what i was told by my recruiter tha we are authorized to offer and im pretty sure it hasnt changed that much in 2 weeks

I have a friend that went in for CTI and got a 16,000 bonus... So def. if going for Nuke you should get a big bonus.

IDK if she'll read the posts, but Amber, my hubby is in subs too, He more than likely signed up for SECF and from there no one knows what they will be until the graduate BESS, they can go into 3 fields of SECF, FT, ST, and, ET they put their choices down 1 being top 3rd being the one they dont want, my hubby wanted FT too, he got Sonar. FT is the hardest one to get into. I know a lot of ppl that thought they were going to groton for a specific SECF job when in the enlisment papers that they sign it only says SECF b/c no one is guarnteed anything until after they graduate BESS and the PO's choose theit jobs for them.

WOW! that is a big sigh of relief then. He went to three higher ups and was able to get FT rather than sonar. I think he would have been angry and struggled if he had not gotten what he wanted.

Once qual is down and I think 4 or 5 more to go.........then DOLPHINS baby!
