Son very ill Back in hospital diagnosis Guillain-Barre syndrome

I recieved a call from North Chicago Va last night My son was just released last sunday after recovering from pneumonia. He was sent back to the RTC to the holding division to wait to be put back with his division. he started having symptoms of weakness in his arms hands and legs about 3 days ago.He said he couldnt even salute his officers. He got in trouble because they thought he was just faking. They sent him to the hospital yesterday and the e.r dr. also thought he was faking so they sent him for psycic evaluation he was found to be completely sane and not crazy...Thank god they got another Dr. the same one he had when he was sick last week to do some test. Then they put him in the critical care unit...This disorder is very rare and is not well known from what I have found on it. It is when his immune system starts attacking his nervous system. He can't lift his legs at this point and it could cause him to be placed on a ventilator if it attacks his lungs. I talked to the dr. last night and he has told me he is stable for now.I will be contacted if it progresses any I will then fly to chicago. MY PROBLEM is that I dont know how I will get from the airport to the hospital once I get there Renting a car wouldn't be an option because of the cost and then I wouldnt know which way to go anyway... Is there any resources that I can use through the navy to get help with this?Once I get there I will stay at the hospital and sleep in a chair if I have to I just dont want my son alone in a strange place with all of this happening to him. He is scared to death. They have explained to him that it could make him stop breathing so he is just terrified of that happening. He wants to know why me. This only affects 1or 2 in 100,000.If anyone can give me some help or tell me who to contact please let me know...VERY SCARED MOM!!!!!!!

Kristine, get me your sons last name and room info and we can get another Navy mom in Chicago to sit with him untill you get there. He is scared and devsated and as much as the staff will want to help him, each nurse has between 10 and 12 pts. Lets see if we can get him some support untill he can have your Mom's love with him.
I know its hard, but if you slow down, and let some us that know a little bit about whats going on help, it will not impede your progress to your boy, and could save you a bunch of money to boot. LOL. Thats always good , huh? Don't look up G.Barr now, you can do that once you get there as you will have acess to a computer on base.

Miss Kristina, please email me with your address. I'd like to send a small amount of money to help you with expenses. Even a little bit could help to buy a meal or whatever you need.

Thank you all for your replies and offers of help and support I have not made the plans to fly to chicago am still trying to get it all figured out as to IF I will be able to I talked with my son a few hours ago and he is still stable it has not progressed any and they did a lung function test and it was 90% so that is great. I will let you know how things go and if I will be going I am just hoping he will start getting better they have started the immunoglobulin therapy so maybe that will help..Again thank you all!!!!!

Hi Kristina, you will be remembered in my thoughts and prayers! How devastating this must be! I have only heard of this
disease once before. A well liked dentist in our town was diagnosed with this a few years ago. He was pretty bad off for a while I think, but is now teaching dental school. I hope you can find a way to get the proper help for him. I can totally understand why you are scared ...... I would be too!!! Bless your son's heart .....being so sick like that and then getting in trouble for something that he couldn't help! My heart aches for you both. God be with now and always. Wanda

I'm sorry Kristina--I'm a nurse and I worked on a unit for a short time where we dealt with this syndrome. It is very rare and you get it after having some sort of virus. I do know that it's not something he will have to suffer through everyday, there are flare-ups and remissions. I hope that he gets to feeling better soon!
