Son very ill Back in hospital diagnosis Guillain-Barre syndrome

I recieved a call from North Chicago Va last night My son was just released last sunday after recovering from pneumonia. He was sent back to the RTC to the holding division to wait to be put back with his division. he started having symptoms of weakness in his arms hands and legs about 3 days ago.He said he couldnt even salute his officers. He got in trouble because they thought he was just faking. They sent him to the hospital yesterday and the e.r dr. also thought he was faking so they sent him for psycic evaluation he was found to be completely sane and not crazy...Thank god they got another Dr. the same one he had when he was sick last week to do some test. Then they put him in the critical care unit...This disorder is very rare and is not well known from what I have found on it. It is when his immune system starts attacking his nervous system. He can't lift his legs at this point and it could cause him to be placed on a ventilator if it attacks his lungs. I talked to the dr. last night and he has told me he is stable for now.I will be contacted if it progresses any I will then fly to chicago. MY PROBLEM is that I dont know how I will get from the airport to the hospital once I get there Renting a car wouldn't be an option because of the cost and then I wouldnt know which way to go anyway... Is there any resources that I can use through the navy to get help with this?Once I get there I will stay at the hospital and sleep in a chair if I have to I just dont want my son alone in a strange place with all of this happening to him. He is scared to death. They have explained to him that it could make him stop breathing so he is just terrified of that happening. He wants to know why me. This only affects 1or 2 in 100,000.If anyone can give me some help or tell me who to contact please let me know...VERY SCARED MOM!!!!!!!

Good morning, I spoke to Kristina Monday evening, Andrew was doing well, it was his first time on the treadmill, a little shake and nervous, he also went up some steps. He's making wonderful progress. Fran's son should have been transferred Tuesday, to a Rehab facility. We need to keep our prayers strong for these young men and moms.
Have a great day ladies!

Andrew was released back to RTC ship 6 this morning it was a very emotional morning for us both He has some fears of relapse and still has very low stamina levels He will be on light duty for 7 days.He will have a medical review and they will decide if he will continue or come home to rest and rehab for awhile and return at a later date. Now is just the waiting game and back to listening for the phone to ring or mail to come.I will not be able to fly home early the ticket change would cost me 400 dollars so I will remain here in waukegan til my original flight on tuesday..I will continue to post updates as I get them Thank you all Again for the continued prayers..Love Kristina

Hi Kristina, I am so glad that Andrew has made a recovery--maybe not a complete one just yet but it sounds as if his strength is regaining. My son is also on ship 6--he is there with a injured leg. He also was going to be on light duty for 7 days before trying to get back into training. I hope they become friends and help each other through this. Sounds like it's a good place to be for our recovering recruits. He was set to PIR tomorrow until he was injured on Tuesday. God bless them children of ours, the worry never ends. Well here's hoping and praying they all pull through this trying time! Janet

So glad to hear that he has made such good progress Kristina and it's very understandable why he would be concerned of a relapse as quick as it came on. Hope the next week of light duty works out well for Andrew and perhaps he can continue on with his training. Best wishes to him!
