My sailor hurt his knee on duty. He just finished boot camp about a month ago & is in A-school. He was on lite duty for a week, then reinjured it worse when he went off lite duty. He loves the Navy & wants to stay in, but is afraid he will be discharged if he needs surgery. Anybody know how this works????? Would they discharge him??

I also know that he said he broke his big toe during boot camp & wouldn't tell anyone b/c he was afraid of being set back...

Hello, If this is during bootcamp until she can call you again that is all you will know. If she is injured you could go to the base to get information. My advice if you want to see immediate assistance and answers is contact your local congressmen. Call them and someone will get you answer within 72 hours. By the way iserved 10 years and this is the best way for family members to get information when the military will not provide it.

I love how everyone thinks to call the congressman right away but never thinks to just call the base.

I'm a little astounded myself, Hoppi.

I know when my son went through GL during battlestations one of the girls broke her hip.. she was at ship 17 while it healed and like Anti M's friend did took some initative to keep busy in a good way and was able to go through again once she healed up.. Good luck to her... she's in my prayers... Debby

from experience your sailor will not get separated unless it's something that will affect her for the rest of her life, like if she had torn a tendon or something. she'll be put on hold and go through physical therapy untill the navy decides she's well enough to finish bootcamp. she'll be place in a division that is close to the point where she left her original division and graduate with them.

Now here this, now here this....

Recruits who are rehab'ing so they can finish training do not go to Ship 5 (formerly 17). They go to Ship 6, where they go to physical therapy 2 times a day, have their own gym in the compartment and do computer based training in the evenings. Sailors (those who have completd all training) who have injuries go to Ship 5 to heal as a Sailor. Difference? Sailors in Ship 5 get liberty. Recruits in Ship 6 do not.

Contacting your Congressman is ridiculous in most instances. The info is available to you quite easily by calling the Public Affairs Office. Explain that the phone connection was bad and you are uneasy because you don't understand what is wrong with him and request (notice I didn't say demand or threaten) he call home to verify his info. Easy Day!

BTW, stress fx's are not diagnosed until after the x-ray. Docs will say you may have one so we will treat it like one until you get your xray and we know for sure.

She'll be sent to ship 6 to heal in the RCU/FIT divisions if the x-ray turns up something. From there the docs will put her into the correct path to heal up and allow her to continue her training.
RCU isn't terrible the girls are treated really nicely as long as they maintain their military bearing and don't forget that they are still in bootcamp. The only thing that is on their schedule are the three daily meals to allow their doctors/therapists to have complete control over their time so they can get back into training as quickly as possible.

I hope everything goes well for her.
