What happens if sailor fails nuke program studies?

Hi, My nephew is concerned he will be kicked out of the Navy if he fails to keep up his grades in the Nuclear Power Program. He's currently last in his class in SC. Does anyone know what happens if he fails? I suggested he speak to his commanding officer to seek a tutor before he falls to far behind. He's a nice kid and is trying very hard to stay on course.

My son, Justin, is in A school right now, and I'm hearing from him that if you fail out of Nuke school you are processed out of the Navy. He is working hard and feeling pretty stressed out. It sounds like he is not alone in this. I am going to pray for all our nuke sailors - for wisdom and strength.

My son just recently graduated from the Nuke School in SC -- this is what he suggests: Tell him as long as he's really putting up 100% effort and depending on what point of school he is in, they will let him choose a conventional job or go to the fleet as a conventional EM, ET, MM (if he has completed A school). If he is not giving a full effort he WILL go as undesignated. Tell him to get more IA's, spend more time with the instructors in their offices. If you let us know what point of school he's in and what rank he is my son could try to help him more (his ex-roomie is currently an instructor there). You can leave me a message here or at segollaher@yahoo.com

Sue,
Thanks for those words of advice! I keep trying so hard to encourage him and give him good moral support, because he is very intelligent and I have absolutely no doubt that he can make it.

My daughter has already been through the SC school and is now stationed in Japan. She said they put you back a few weeks or give you another rating.

For those of you with Nukes that are struggling, tell them to ask for reassignment into another great field before he risks being taken out of the Navy. It is such an opportunity and I said before, I too will pray your nephew makes it at whatever he needs in life. But being prepared and getting around being ousted can be very helpful.

Have faith, if he wants to stay in he will, but make sure he's talking to his commanding officer constantly about his career.
My Sailor went to BC for Nuke, found out the recruiter did not have a required academic waiver and was reassigned to EM A school, diagnosed for asthma but on a med he was allergic to, put on a medical chit, fought the efforts to be discharged, they figured out the allergy problem, worked at Great Lakes for nearly a year as undesignated, really learned the ropes, went to another A school, is now a FCSN assigned to C school in San Diego learning tomahawks, first duty station is Pearl Harbor in July. It's been aggravating, puzzling and exhilirating to be a Navy mom, oh and he's having his ceremony for promotion to Petty Officer 3rd class July 1. But sounds like your nephew will be just fine, they want the young men and women that WANT to be in the Navy :)

Toni,
My son is in Goose Creek too. It's a really difficult program. He is a little over 1/2 way through A school and studies all the time (at least it seems like it) Matt attended East Carolina University for 3 years before entering the Navy and says college courses are easy compared to the Nuke Program. He has asked for extra help on several occasions. I too have worrried each night before a test and can't wait to hear how he did on test day. It does get better with time. Make sure your nephew asks for help, the Navy wants to help those who want to learn. He's a really bright young man or he wouldn't be in the program.

He won't be kicked out. He has to do something drastic to be kicked out. Dont worry about that. My husband went through the nuk program. He was kicked out 2 weeks before he graduated power school because his chief lied. It is very difficult. It strains the mind it is mostly mentle for the people that go through it. He needs to go to his chain of command and ask for help. If he is as far behind as you say he is probably been put on extra hours so that he doesn't fall behind. All you can do for him is pray and always be there for him. It is hard I know. i went through it. Just know it gets better and easier as he goes through if he can hold that thought and keep pushing through he'll be fine.

Hello Toni, My son is also currently at Goose Creek. He is also struggling with the courses in phase 2. My son is always studying and is constantly seeking help from his instructors. I always tell him that there is no shame in asking for help. No one knows everything . Class rankings don't matter...what matters is that he is still passing at this point. I'm not quite sure what happens if they fail out of the program, but I will ask my son when I talk to him. I will keep your nephew in my prayers. Good luck to your nephew. I know that my son was having another exam sometime this week. I haven't heard from my son yet as to how hid did.

Hi Toni - My daughter finished power school last year. It is a difficult course, and I know that lots of kids have difficulties. I know from what my daughter told me that the ones who fail the program do NOT get kicked out of the Navy, but are sent straight to the fleet, undesignated. That really isn't a good situation for a bright kid, so getting a tutor is a great idea. My daughter always said they had great tutoring there in SC, so hopefully your nephew can find some help. My daughter was one that tutored others that had problems. Let me know if you need any more info. Patty

Hi, Just wanted to thank everyone for all the responses. We spoke with my nephew and he's doing better. He did ask for help and we hope he makes it. Thanks everyone once again for all the support. What a great site!

My son told me that nukes going for Machinists Mates, MM, who did not pass nuke school were sent to become regular mechanics. He said they totally excel at this. I'm not sure about the other rates. If he got into the Nuke program he is smart. He might just need someone to help him. As has been said, they will go out of their way as they do not want anyone to fail. The instructors/tutors make themselves very available.
