What happens if sailor fails nuke program studies?

Hi, My nephew is concerned he will be kicked out of the Navy if he fails to keep up his grades in the Nuclear Power Program. He's currently last in his class in SC. Does anyone know what happens if he fails? I suggested he speak to his commanding officer to seek a tutor before he falls to far behind. He's a nice kid and is trying very hard to stay on course.

Hi,

My son went through Nuke school and passed. Thank God! There were some that didnt though and according to him most were reclassified in other areas. None were sent that far down the line because they are extremely talented and intelligent kids. Tell your nephew to hang in there! Some of the students had to retake the test a few times to pass also. they let you take it a couple times in the end so tell him dont give up yet!

Good luck to him and i will pray for him.

My son is in SC, he is half way through prototype (last phase of Nuke school). The first phase of Nuke school is A school. This is where you become an ET, EM or MM. My son chose MM. Once your nephew is through A school, he has a rate and will not go to the fleet undesignated. Power school is where they learn about the reactors and how his rate relates to the reactors - MM's fix the moving parts, ET's worry about how the computers are working, EM's worry about the electronics (I may have the ET's and EM's switched, not real clear on them). Prototype is where they apply their knowledge in a safe setting, and learn their job.
They will not kick him out of the Navy, it's a scare tactic.
There is a test half way through prototype and according to my son, if you fail the test or fall too far behind in prototype you will go to mast and be awarded some time away from the reactors, and possibly an opportunity to make a mandatory donation to the Navy from your pay. After the vacation they will restart the sailor in the program at a point that is slightly before the point at which the sailor started to experience difficulty. During A school and power school, they assign additional study hours and may pair your sailor up with another sailor that is ahead of the curve.
If these tactics do not help your sailor, they will be reassigned.
Your sailor signed a leaglly binding contract with the Navy, there are only certain reasons that a sailor can be washed out of the Navy - they are listed in the UCMJ. Failing nuke school is not one of them.

I believe they will re-train him for something else. It is a very hard program to get through.

It is a very hard program. My son Chris is a teacher in New York for Nuclear Power on the Naval Base. It is a very hard school to get through. Just make sure that he is studying. But if he does fail, they retrain him for something else. Good Luck to your son! There are only certain things that a sailor would be washed out of the Navy. And failing Nuke School is not one of them.
