What jobs are there for recruits that are color deficient

My son is partially color blind. He passed one test at meps but failed it at RTC. He had a contract going to RTC for Nuke but now that is out, in fact what I can gather almost everything is out. Does anyone have an advice or help??

I didn't realize color blindness was so common. My son left for boot camp on Tuesday. He found out he was color blind with red colors when he went to Meps. He originally wanted to follow in my brother's footsteps and work in advanced electronics - but that and his alternative choices were eliminated.

When they offered him Utilitiesman, he jumped on it. I was disappointed for him at first, but he is more excited to be a Seabee than he ever was about electronics,so it all worked out. He said the best thing about being a Seabee is you get to spend more time on land and you also have the opportunity to work with residents in other countries and make a difference in their communities.

My son is a Corpsman and is also colorblind. Also, I dont know if it applies to all jobs but he can request a waiver so he can still go for the job he wants . Have him ask if this is a possiblity.

Hi Pam,
My son Josh had the same problem. Luckily he found the storekeepers position which entailed accounting. He plans on going to college to become an accountant so that helps. He actually went to the Navy website and looked at the job listing there. It was very helpful. The recruiter should be able to get him a list of jobs that he can qualify for. Good luck to you and your family.

how is it going Miss. My name is James and I enlisted in the navy last august. Right now I am a MM, but I wanted to go in the crypto field. I re took the asvab test in January and I scored a lot higher than my first time. I submitted 5 different crypto jobs and I was suppost to get a response in the end of February. I talked to my petty officer and he told me that the reason that it didn't work out was because I am partiually color blind. I never knew that color blindness took a part in the crypto field. He did tell me that I can try to waver it but that it would be hard to accomplish.

I found this website, trying to find some type of information on how I can make the waver work.

I saw that you stated in your postings that you have a son that will be in the navy for 6 years in June. You also stated thy he did pass the waver. I have a couple of questions:

1. Is it possible if I can have his name, so I can present it to my petty officer?

2. Is there anything that you can reccomend me inorder for me to get the crypto jobs?

Thank you very much for your time.
Please contact me asap.

Pam, my son Jesse is also color blind--just like his dad. When he joined he was told that he could not do anything with airplanes or computers. He has been an Engineman for the past 12 years. At first he was on a frigate (first deployment to Iraq), then an instructor at Great Lakes, and now he is a Riverine serving on his third deployment to Iraq. Apparently being color blind doesn't interfer with your job over there:)

My son is also colored blind. He was going in for nuke. But now he is a corpsman, he loves it . There is alot you can do if you are colored blind. So don't give up yet. A corpsman is a great job.

My son was diagnosed as being color blind as young as grade school, again in high school and at MEPS. At that point (3 years ago) he decided to become a Machinest Mate, and LOVES it. I guess it's a dying job though since most ships have gone nuclear rather than steam. Your son may want to check into that, if so inclined. It takes a certain type person to work in the bowels of the ship!

Hi Pam, my son is color blind too. He can tell something is red but not sure of the shade. This kept him from doing alot of jobs he would have liked. He is a Navy Corpsman. He is attached to the Marines and has already been to Afghanistan last March. He is based in Cherry Point and will be going back to Camp Lejuene this summer. He will be going back over to Afghanistan again sometime this year. If he is interested in Medical field corpsman might be something to look into. They also have corpsman on ships. God bless you and your son. Renee

qualifying for nuke means he has a good score, he can do anything that does not deal with electronics.

Thanks for the comment. Right now, I am still waiting for someone to call and let me know what they found out at the cardiologist today (17 th) I am hoping that if everything went ok at the Dr's, then my son will get to call another time. If something went wrong, wouldnt someone have been in contact with me by now ? Cathy
