Good explanation of "O" and "I"... I always remember that "O" is outside on the planes and "I" is inside a lab on the ship! Inside and outside...

Cindy-Kent's Mom -

Thank you so very much for taking the time to explain some of that to me! I will print that out tomorrow and try to better understand it. I like how you defined the "O" and the "I," that's the simplest explanation I've seen so far. I think I can understand that, LOL!

Thanks again. It really is appreciated!!!!

Well it's almost 9pm and I'm still waiting for the call from my son or husband to tell me Drew has arrived. Very stressful day of continuing canceling of flights because of the north east storm yesterday. He did go to the USO in the airport. They did have food for them but he said there were about 100 military stranded and sleeping all over the floor and such. I'm sure he will be glad to get back in his own bed tonight however late that will be.

Hi Stve's mom,
"O" works on the equipment on the planes and "I" works on the equipment in a lab. I believe my son's orders were also AV and he is an AT. See information below and I hope I helped.

Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) is a US Navy enlisted rating or job specialty (often called MOS by other services). At the paygrade of E-9 (Master Chief Petty Officer) ATs merge with the Aviation Electrician's Mate (AE) rating to become Avionics Technicians (AV). There has been talk of completely merging the two ratings but as of yet no definite plans have been announced. Aviation Electronics Technicians wear the specialty mark of a winged helium atom.
Aviation Electronics Technicians (Intermediate) perform intermediate level maintenance on aviation electronic components supported by conventional and automatic test equipment, including repair of Weapons Replaceable Assemblies (WRA) and Shop Replaceable Assemblies (SRA) and perform test equipment calibration/repair and associated test bench maintenance.[1]
Aviation Electronics Technicians (Organizational) perform organizational level maintenance on aviation electronics systems, to include: communications, radar, navigation, antisubmarine warfare sensors, electronic warfare, data link, fire control and tactical displays with associated equipment.[1]

So sad...this storm is keeping my son in an airport overnight. Hopefully tomorrow we will see him, if all goes well in Charlotte. Now he has to fly into a different airport tomorrow am so we can pick him up.

Good afternoon,

Would anyone be willing to give a confused mom a brief rundown on something?

My son graduates boot camp on 12/30 (Lord willing :)...and is supposed to fly to Pensacola on 1/6/10. He said his orders show "AV O" vs "AV I" - he was confused as to what the difference is between the "O" and the "I." I've tried to figure it out, and well, haven't, LOL.

As far as I can tell, all AV's go to their core training (about 8 weeks or so?) and then break out into different tracks...do the AV's select their track desired, or is it based upon their scores in the core training, etc? I'm unclear on that.

Help! And thanks in advance =)

Hi Debbi, I haven't heard that they are not allowed to stay on base friday night. if I had known that I would have booked his flight for friday night. his brother has a hockey game on saturday but he won't be here in time. Also I know he is a little limited on cash so having to pay a hotel room could be an issue for him. I'll have to ask him if he knows anything about this. thanks for the heads up. that's why I like this site so much.

Hi Everyone Barb my son flies in on Saturday also. I hear they are not aloud to stay on the base on Friday when they start Leave. So I guess some are staying in hotel rooms near the airport overnight before they leave. Kind of goofy they that have to leave but I guess they don't mind too much. I can't wait to have him home as I'm sure all families are that are getting to see their sons, daughters husbands and wives. Everyone have a safe and happy holiday!
