Hello ladies!
I just dropped my son off on his new assignment for the USS Abraham Lincoln.
Please tell me all you can and also any tidbits I can pass to my son or a heads up what to do there? He is on a barge I believe for a while...not sure yet.
A very nice young man came out to pick him up. It was so nice to have him home a little while. Goes so fast! Keep in touch!

Once the Lincoln leaves for another deployment, they will give you an idea of when they plan to return. Last year, it left on SD on 3-17-08 and we knew they were planning about a 7 month deployment, so about mid Oct. give or take a few weeks. That will give you a basic idea.
As to specifics, in mid July, Ben sent us the letter from his squadron about the cruise, which was set for about Oct. 1. So we had 2 1/2 months of "real" time notice. The letter did state, that there still might be a couple of days leeway.
The ship got into port on 9-30 and left on 10-3. We had hopped to be there when the Lincoln pulled in, but they came a day early.
hope that helps.

Thanks for all the information. Sue, when you mentioned about the toy air craft carrier it reminded me of when my son was about 8 or 9 and he built a model air craft carrier (about 3 feet long). Little did we know that one day he would be assigned to one-LOL. We always knew he'd end up in the military though. He was the only kid we knew who read books about military history and watched the history channel for "fun." He built model navy planes even before he could read the directions!
More questions...how far in advance of the cruise do we start getting the information about it? As you can probably tell by now, I'm a planner. Plus, I'll have to figure out how to manage to miss school because I'm planning on going on the cruise!

Sue - what a find! Have fun making it the 72. Hubby is fine without the backpack, his real souvenirs are his photos, and he got tons of those!

oh forgot-I bought a toy air craft carrier at a yard sale for $5 yesterday. My husband said no, but I went back later and got it. I am going to make it the Lincoln. It's about 3 feet long.

That's a shame. about the back pack. It's probably too late, but have your son check with MWR department. It is on the mess deck, not too far from the mess hall.
Anyway, a couple of moms didn't get them. So I asked around and was told to check that office out. I did and we were told that they were going to print some more. So it's possible that there are some.
I don't know if if they did print more, but I am sure that it wasn't common knowledge. Did he get the other items?
The sailor that was our escrot on the bus after tiger cruise told us there were 1200 tigers on board. The Lincoln had more people on it coming back then when they left cause so many tigers came on board in Hawaii and not that many sailors left.

Cheryle - my hubby went from Hawaii to San Diego then on up to Everett. He said the trip up to Everett was quite boring, as all the planes were offloaded in San Diego, and nothing much was happening on the last leg of the trip. My daughter and I plan to only do the Hawaii-San Diego part. My husband didn't get the backpack, as they ran out of them before he could get one.

Hi Cheryl,
we only did the Hawaii to San Diego part. that cost $105. We arrived on 10-1 and left port on 10-3. got into San Diego about 9-9:30 am on the 8th. Alot of people arrived on the 2nd and were able to just get on the ship. You had to board by night of the 2nd, as we left on the 3rd.
We wanted to spend one night in Hawaii and stayed on Ford Island in the navy lodge. Just a beautiful place and we could see the Lincoln from there.
and the $105 also included a t-shirt, backpack, 2 water bottle holders, a coin and 2 patches! I wore that backpack the whole time I was on board the ship.

Barbooch-Oh my, I didn't know the cost was so reasonable. A ticket to Hawaii would need to be saved for, but $130 is cheap! I know I can't be gone for 2 weeks though (unless I got lucky and the cruise hit the same time as our spring break or during the summer). You said he took the "full 2 weeks." Does that mean you can cruise for a shorter amount of time? I'm getting excited and I know it is still a long way off :))))

I'm not Sue, but my hubby went on the same cruise she did, and it cost $130 for the food they ate. He did the full two weeks. Yup, they only charge you for your food!

Of course, the plane ticket to Hawaii was his own responsibility, as was the hotel there for a couple of days beforehand.
