Moms, do your kids have laptops that they can take on the ship with them, or are there restrictions? My son is reporting on Oct 15th, and I was going to send him there with a small notebook laptop bc it seems like once they are on the ship, the space would be very limited. Suggestions?

Yes I always told him he would not understand till he was grown with kids of his own....so I guess since he is single and 20 the Navy has brought a whole lot of things into perspective FAST! Good night ladies!

anytime, sometimes we moms DO know more than our kids!!!!! (haven't we all been trying to tell our kids since they were little that we knew everything and now they are finally figuring that to be true.... and that we didn't lie when they were little like they thought!!!!) LOL

Just to confirm the deployment and such..... they will deploy next fall and will not come out of drydock til Jan. timeframe. AFterwards they will go out for their qualifications at short intervals until its time for the big deployment. Of course we all know things do change but those times are pretty close. Hope this helps those with kids attached to a squadron, cause I know thats a little different than being on the ship fulltime like my son.

My son is in the Norfolk area of Virginia. Cause he's with a squadron that is assigned to the Lincoln.
I've been to the Midway. It's really cool. We toured that when our son deployed last year. And the Lincoln is much, much bigger!

Hi Marie, My son is AO.

Thanks Sue! I am not surprised that I spelled DET *debt*! Oppsss... Thanks for the clarification. Just spoke with my daughter in San Diego - she is thrilled to be there, but not looking forward to the 12 hour work days for next 9 days.

Your son confirms what my daughter has found out; she believes that the Lincoln is in dry dock again - I know it was in 2005/2006, too.

Tomorrow she is going with friends to look at the USS Midway Museum; I looked at the web site and wish I were there with her...

Where is your son stationed? Somewhere in WA?

My son is assigned to the Lincoln thru his squadron. I just talked to my son to confirm this. It's called a"DET" which stands for detachment. and that means they detach from their usual duties/post to a temporary one. Every squadron does those periodically for training purposes and once the Lincoln is in the water again, there will be 1 or 2 month DETS. The sailors need to be kept up with the training on the ship.
He says the Lincoln is not deploying this fall, but next. He's been off for 10 days, but is quite sure that nothing has changed.
The Lincoln came back from a 7 month deployment on 10-8-08 to San Diego and probably about thre 10th to Everett,Washington it's home port.
