My son went through training while deployed last year and took the assignment for 1 year. Its been a year+ right now, he's waiting on another training class to finish up so someone can take his place and at that time he will go back to ABF on the flight deck. I would say there could be a lot of diff. reasons why someone goes through this, so I don't want to take a guess on that.

How long does TAD typically last and is there any particular reason they would pick a sailor to go through the training?

My son is at the end of his TAD in security now. As for the support of WA area residents.... there will always be those that are supportive my son has said that many aren't though. He has been there for 3 years now and will not wear his uniform anywhere around the area. He doesn't even like to tell anyone he is military. Although one time he came home in his uniform and someone at SEA-TAC came up to him and thanked him for his service. He was shocked but very happy. Seattle is a very liberal area and sometimes I think the liberals aren't very supportive of our military. I know thats generalizing people and I don't mean to but its just an observation my son and I have made.

Yes, Derek has.

Have any of your sailors done security on the ship?

oh ok. When I was little and living in MD we would drive up through WV on our way to Pittsburgh to visit our relatives. Yup, I am sure it depends on who our sailors meet. I moved around so much growing up, but not military, and there were nice people and not so nice people everywhere we lived. I guess the coffee up there is pretty good! hahaha

I am in Vienna/Parkersburg area. We are right on the Ohio River near Marietta Ohio. Derek thought the people in Pensacola were pretty supportive! I guess it depends on where you go and the people you encounter. Derek has been there eights months now and he loves the weather there. (who loves that weather??? rain, gray skies, more rain!)

Penny, that surprises me about the comments you heard. My son has only been there about a month, but he likes Bremerton (he is living on the barge). He said it is small but the people in town that he has met have been friendly. Maybe that will change when he is living in Everett. Of course, all he has to compare it to is Pensacola, where he said people were very unfriendly towards the sailors. I went to Vancouver BC a few years back, and I assume the lay of the land is similar, and it was so beautiful. Penny, I am in Greensboro NC, where in WV are you?

Thanks! I'm looking forward to chatting with other moms. I was surprised that the folk in WA weren't more support of the military there. We heard some pretty negative comments on the train into town.

Welcome Penny! this is a great place to connect with moms and learn lots of great stuff!
My son is with a squadron with is attached to the Lincoln. He's in VA, but served on a 7 month deployment last year.
