Donna, so glad to hear that he contacted you! I am breathing a sigh of relief for you. And we can't help worrying, that's what we do.

Hey Donna, I would be calling his friends. Of course you can worry and a week is a long time
. Do you have any information on his friends? When Ben was out to sea, I heard from him almost every day and sometimes several times in a day, depending on what he was doing job wise,
Once we went 4 days without word and I was getting pretty anxious. Turns out there were admirals from the army on board and communications were blacked out. My husband read about it in the newspaper and then we breathed a sigh of relief.
Keep us posted when you hear from him.

No I didn't hear the catapults. I was at the fan tail end of the ship. Had a sick tiger and heard announcements about medical help. A good deal of the sailors in my berthing were up and packing. They were pretty quiet though, just lots of movement.

Donna, yes it was the last night. I had a hard time getting to sleep. I noticed that the sailors in my cube had nice comforters on their racks. Flannel sheets would be really cozy!

Everyone, per the guidelines, do not talk about present or future ship movements publicly. CC

it is cold! I slept in sweatpants, socks and a t-shirt. with a tank top under it. One night I was so cold, I put on all that plus my flannel shirt that I used as a "robe", my flannel sheet that I brought from home, the ship's sheet and wool blanket. sweat pants are good too. long sleeve loose fitting shirt.

Sue, thanks for the info about the medical exam. My husband and I would like to take a tiger cruise when our son is in the fleet. I bet he would like to mentor them also.

I bet she got to cook in the galley. I asked if I could help, but I would've had to pass a medical exam first and since I was just there for a few days, that didn't work. It would be interesting to read her article.

I hope you all don't mind me butting in. My son finished A school and will be going to C school in San Diego as an FC. However, I know a fine lady who mentored CS (culinary specialists) aboard the Abraham Lincoln in 2004. My husband is the Director of the East Texas Chef's Association, and Sheri has Dessert Dreams in Dallas.

Here is her letter I got back when I inquired what carrier she was on:

Hi Carol-

Congratulations!

My dad was in the navy during WWII - he was also a Fire Controlman.
When I was little I thought that meant he put out fires on board ship!!
Eventually he explained that he helped "aim" the big guns and
torpedos at targets. Totally different from now of course.

I boarded the USS Theodore Roosevelt (Carrier) in September 2003
from Norfolk and cruised down the east coast to Florida but was evavuated by
COD because of an incoming huricane.

In September 2004, I and 3 other chefs from Dallas were flown from
San Diego to the USS Abraham Lincoln (Carrier) while at sea and cruised north
up the Pacific to Seattle.

In May of 2006 I took the USS San Antonio from Norfolk to New York for
Fleet Week. What an experience that was - cruising up the harbor!

I wrote an article after my first trip for the Lone Star Chef.
If you contact the state office they probably have it on file.

Shari

I'll try to find that article. It describes everything.

Thanks for letting me post.
