Welcome to the Navy world of Hurry Up and Wait.  Patience and flexibility will be your friends from now on.

@Katnip ... all sailors go through indoc when getting to a new command.  It is mostly about the base rules and their duty rotation.  Many schools do not start weekly, they have to have a certain number of students to "class up".  He may be there for a bit longer than 10 weeks, it simply is not possible to count weeks and know when they will be done.

@Phoenixmom ... some of the technical schools require them to take the ATT (advance apprentice training, an electronics prep school) before beginning their A school.  If he's in AECF, GM, or EM (and a few others), then that's what he's doing.

Leave and liberty are not supposed to be combined, as leave lets them travel and liberty does not.  Any Sat/Sun/holiday included in the leave request period will be charged as a day of leave.  I remember Anti M posting this, I saved it.

Good Morning Ladies, Happy Wed.

Bandmom that sounds Fantastic and wonderful! I'm not sure what my boy has, he just mentioned he can fly in on the 22nd and leave a day or two days early so he can be back on time. I don't want to push it with to many questions, I figure he knows more than I do. I'm just ecstatic to see my Son, want to make sure I make all his favorite foods for the holidays. We got his room painted, ordering his area rug for room and getting his bedroom set at the end of the month. I cant wait for him to see what a difference it will look like. There is so much more room since I took out a lot of mess in their. Boys they sure like keeping everything....Understatement. LOL! I feel so overwhelmed with everything coming so fast, anyone feeling the same way? This year just flew by Quick. You know I am hoping my Son can come home after A school, he mentioned he is in school and taking classes but hasn't started A school can someone explain that. Not sure what that meant, but I just said ok not knowing what he meant. Thanks Ladies hope you all are well have a Blessed Day!

On the bright side, the chow hall does a wonderful Christmas dinner, and many charitable organizations and churches hold events and parties for the sailors staying behind.  There are things to do if they want to go do them.

I'm an aunt of a sailor, not a mom ... and a former sailor married to a retired sailor.

They earn leave days at 2.5 each month, for a total of 30 each year.  Coming out of boot camp, they have about 5 days.  You sailor should have some idea of how many days they have earned, and how many they can earn between the holiday stand down and when they finish A school.  If they borrow for the holiday, then they might be at zero when school finishes, and would not be allowed to take leave then.  Long schools, no problem, otherwise they have to decide how to "spend" their days.  They do not have to take the full 16 days at stand down.  Perhaps a week would do, or ten days.  That is very common for those trying to juggle holidays and leave after school.

Yes, if they stay on base, they will have duty every other day.  They will be shoveling snow, perhaps.  It sucks.

Hi Katnip, and Phoenixmom, my son will graduate A school in Feb. He was going to only use a week for Christmas, and save the rest for after A school.  However he was told buy other sailors to stay home for the complete stand down.  They told him you do not want to be there during that time.  He figured out his leave time, and will still have 1 week left when he finished A school.

That's funny, Katnip. My son just graduated A school, but he saved his leave for Christmas and the stand down. He says it sounds like it's really unpleasant to be on base during the stand down. Another mom (Anti M?) advised someone that this is probably the last chance for them to be home for the holidays, too. How much A school does your sailor have left? Since they earn 2.5 days a month, it might be long enough that he can build up again?

Hi ladies just spoke to my son He put in his chit today.....So I am hoping within a few weeks he will be able to find out the results.  Will let you know the Outcome. Katnip73 that question is a good one! but I will leave that for Anti M to answer she knows more about all that than I do still learning the ropes. but their are a lot of Ladies on this site that may have the answer. so I will be looking for that my self.
