Hi Alison, did you see it? OMG, it was such a very neat thing to see, I couldn't help the tears it was so heart warming watching all the families greeting their lives ones. My Son messaged me when he was off the Carrier and sent a picture. I believe he is on his way home. Can't wait to see and hug him. Baby is very cute and so alert. Thank you for asking.

Just another idea, if you simply must send frosted cupcakes, put the frosting on the inside before baking. Don't over stuff them, but they do ship well that way. We call them inside out cupcakes.

If allowed to send baked goods, cookies packed in Pringles cans works great too.

Baked goods are allowed, but some of the barracks have stricter rules about unsealed food.  The rules also change often.  You'll have to ask your sailor what their barracks rules are.  Pack everything well, in hard plastic containers, and pack the box tightly (less movement means less crumbling).  Cookies, brownies, and candies which do not melt are best options.  Cakes such as pound cakes or fruit breads hold up well.  Frosted cupcakes are a big no.  The package goes to the mailroom, so be sure your sending things which will not spoil or mold or melt.  This is good practice for sending care packages to deployed ships!

Ladies, I have used Bake Me A Wish for my College sons. They says the cakes and brownies are delicious. However I do not know the rules and regs for Navy. I would love to send my SR something for his B'day.

I sent my son cookies while he was in A-School at Great Lakes.  I actually had 2 dozen in ziploc bags.  I packed them in Popcorn.  The mail room wanted the popcorn.  My sailor said you could smell the popcorn through the box..  He was pleasantly surprised to find the hidden cookies.  Only 2 were broken!

Check with your individual sailors and the rules in their barracks, but I think their only concern is spoilage. If you vacuum sealed goods or ordered them locally for delivery, I don’t think that’d be a problem. I used to bring tons of food into the barracks kitchen, I’d bring cupcakes/cookies to the galley, and a lot of wives also made extra cash taking orders from sailors for food/baked goods, but that was 2 years ago, and things are always changing at Great Lakes.
