Life in Bahrain
I have many moms asking me, hows life in Bahrain? So I thought I would put a few things together, post it and update, make corrections as I remember something. Well aside from the very hot sun, nice beaches, museums, malls on and off base, the sand storms , which reak havoc on the weapons some carry :). Here are a few thing that might help.

New Arrivals
1. 2 or 3 weeks of training and classes to learn Bahrain customs, laws and the Navys do's & don't's
2. Not allowed off base til the training is complete.
3. No family housing. Non military persons were removed after 9/11. ("09" spouses allowed back )
4. Lower rank personal(I'll check the rank) must live on base in barricks. Others live off base in rental units.

Duty
1. Shifts are 12 hours long.
2. No uniforms are to be worn off base at any time only civ's (civilian cloths)
3. Unlike the States, there week is Sunday - Thursday weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Misc.
1.They buy cell phones on base at the mall or Nex. They can call you for about 10 cents and send texts for 10 cent per text. (Tho in Bahrain they go by BD'S Bahrain Dollars).
NOTE: They CAN NOT text to some cell phone services. The ones I know are Nextel,Verizon and Sprint.
2. Everything they need can be bought on base at the mall or Nex. Even computers,tv's, music, movies .....everything......
3. Drinking: 18 is the legal drinking age in Bahrain on and off base. This goes for the military personal also with one Navy rule in order to buy/drink liquor or whiskey you must be 21, but at 18 they can consume/purchase beer and wine.

Mail
1. They have a on base post office. Which is closed I belive on Monday's.
2. On packages/letters you send DO NOT write Bahrain, middle east or Manama anywhere on the outside of the mail. This may make it arrive to the town P.O.(Manama) instead of onbase. The military ships its own mail but if it does not arrive to the state side base to be shipped to your sailor than its put on a internatial mail flight and sent to the town P.O. Your sailor will have a p.o. box with a FPO address on base only use the address he/she gives you and your return address. It will look something like this.
*Rank Name*
PSC ??? Box ???
FPO AE 09840-2800

Maybe our great leaders will decide to watch out for the men and women they have sent to the middle east and other parts of the world and not to thier base whom they get money and win elections. The glass houses they live in is not the glass house we the people can afford...
and on pass that... Ben seems to love bahrain, and been there since march 09... most all he can get and very few things he asks for... work and playing softball keeps him busy enough that time flies... the heat will wear on the body he says.. Sorry Maureen, ben is shore patrol so no ship there... i hope your son enjoys his time there ...

Anyones child associated with the ship called "The Devastator". My son is on his way to SD on Friday then off to Bahrain. It all sounded ok until Iran started their insane behavior. I hope the only issue is flies!

I know mine is loving it also and they do keep busy. He was bored with all of the NKO classs and then so much what they are doing in Academy is a repeat from A school, but it helps pass the time and they do take them off base on the charter bus to several attactions. I wonder what they do for them during the holidays???? I mean no traditional American Thanksgiving meal or Christmas either........wish we could send them all the fxins :D

Mine buys anything microwavable, lean pockets, easy mac, lean cusine and keeps it i their fridge in the room to cook as needed. He says he will get a pizza or a salad every now and then at the food places on base. Now that ramadan is. over they can go of base to eat :D

WEll Missy, your son seems happier than mine was. All he has done is grip about food choices. He made us believe there was no galley. That they had to eat out or get stuff from the nex for his dinky frig and microwave. He did go swimming with teh dolphins today and had fun. He isn't much into the cultural stuff they have been going over. He acts like there are actually two parts to the base. One on the harbor and one more inland, I think he is staying at the inland one, but may end up on harbor duty. He starts training specific for his MA job sunday. I am sure the longer he is there and actually starts "working" he will be happier. Glad to know the food situation not as bad as he implied.

Jay has arrived safely... Thank you Lord! Well, we just had a good conversation with him and the call was crystal clear. He is up walking around the base at 0530 (Sat a.m. there) because his days and nights are mixed for the moment.

He said the base is so Americanized. He said it is the USA of the Middle East. They have an A&W, Chili’s, Crispy Crème Donuts, Friday's, Taco Bell, a cafe Seaside or something like that… those are the ones I can remember. He said the galley food is reasonable. He said he bought a meal for $3.00. When I was stationed in GTMO Bay, all we had was the galley, a snack bar, and locals selling food in front of the NEX one day a week, they have it made! LOL

The day they arrived they toured Bahrain off base. He said it is good duty station and he believes he will enjoy this tour. He put his AT&T on military hold and bought a phone there for $40.00 and bought 360 international minutes for $13.00 and then he bought 200 local minutes for $10.00. He said the NEX has just about anything you could possibly want. Here we were all geared up to send care packages from home and he said no need I can go to the NEX and pick it up myself. I am sure after a while I will get that email or call... send me... LOL! He said the sponsor team told him the only time it may get a little low is when a ship comes in they kind of clean the place out.

He cannot leave base again for three weeks and he said he is so busy with courses and getting his schedule down to a routine he does not have time. He has met the CMC; our son said he is a straight shooter.

My hubby and I mailed off 2 boxes/care packages today. They told us it would take about a week to get there. We loaded them up with magazines, local newspapers, lots of cany, sunflower seeds, crackers, cookies, gums, breath mints, some CD's, popcorn, peanuts, etc...............I have already started working on another one :D

Lynne, we talked with Sprint's International phone division before our son left and they told us the Blackberry is the phone they recommend for international calling. My hubby ordered one thru work with a $100 discount, our son paid $99 for it. He pays 39.99 to keep the service and then buys an international sims card on base with prepaid minutes. 400 minutes for $40, so that is 10 cent a minute which Sprint says is a great price, if they had service there it would be $2.50 a minute. We talk everyday on facebook or myspace with our son and then he calls home every couple of days.

Missy, our son called us all the way to Bahrain or was texting his brothers.
He go there on a Thursday, called before he went to sleep........so we have had contact with him every day, mostly on line. It might be different depending on when your Sailor gets there and if there are ships in port then it is hard to get on the phones on base. We have discovered that if there are alot of extra Sailors on that the internet and phone connection is very slow. When our son calls home, sometimes it takes him 2 or 3 times before the call goes thru and we can actually hear his voice. But then again there are times the calls go thru the very first time ??????? hugs to all, and I hope everyone has a great day :D

Guess I'm the new kid on the block!! My son will be deploying to Bahrain the end of November. I keepm seeing where they need to purchase a cell phone there in order to get the .10 minute. Can we order this ahead of time to send with him? That would be a great Christmas gift! Maybe I should just get him a NEX giftcard.

I mailed my son a package friday afternoon sept. 4th from huntsville al and by the next friday Ben had gotten package.. just snailed mail a letter last wed. wonder if it takes as long... now Ben did say one goes and picks up mail and brings the units back (or the group he works with...) with that letter i will get a call... ;( had to put his good ole beagle to sleep... just didn't want that to be an email... handwritten letter from mom better.. funny Ben said he misses wal mart and the best buy ad in sundays paper... what new movies coming out... whoohooo.. so i put things in wally world bag and send ad when i get sundays paper..to add to package... but most important thing we add to our care packages... is "love"... thats what they looking for.. bless your sailors.. may you hear from them soon
