Sorry for lack of updates the last few days. It doesn’t mean there were any updates but rather I was not able to find the time. After over six and a half weeks in the hospital I had to accomplish some things away from the hospital and Raymond gave me the opportunity. Helen sat at his side taking very good care of him while I was away. I was able to return in the early evening but used that time for him.

This weekend and today was mostly consumed with neurology. I know on Friday I asked for prayers concerning possible seizures. At this time we still have not ruled it out but neurology does not think they have observed any. They monitored him all weekend with EEG lines on his head. He had a camera recording his actions and brain waves. Each time we saw any of the repetitive motion that signaled a possible seizure a button was pressed to mark the tape. The entire tape(s) are reviewed by neurology. Each day they would come in for a clinical visit and ask the same questions about what he did and when and what proceeded these actions. We had little to add each day except to repeat the same thing, moved his eye lids, and mouth movement at the same time his right arm would move up and down. Sometimes these sequences would occur and his right arm would have purpose meaning he was trying to do something. If he has purpose to his movement than that is not a seizure.

Each time he had a CT scan the leads for the EEG were removed from his head and then put back on when he returned which is a very slow process. Raymond had his initial CT scan on Friday that showed blood on the brain. Neurology decided to get another CT in 6 hours, than changed it to 12 and finally 24 hours which then extend to 30 hours. The good news is that it showed the same amount of blood as before 1-2 mls. This indicated that it is not still an active bleed. PRAISE THE LORD. This bleed has baffled most because it is liken to a football injury or banging your head. Never the less it is not bleeding anymore so it will soon be forgotten, I hope.

Neurology ordered an MRI hopefully the last test to complete the battery of tests for evaluating Raymond’s neural function. This consumed 5 – 6 hours of the day. Getting him ready for transport, and then preparing him in MRI triage room which includes removing all his wires, monitors, and the ventilator because nothing metallic can go in the MRI room. Once in the MRI room he is connected back to the same type of equipment but non metallic versions. Raymond’s med pole went in the observation room and his lines run through a hole in the wall to him. The test actually lasted 30 minutes, and is very loud, Raymond and I wore ear plugs to deaden the sound.

The MRI will give a better view of the brain and brain stem. They are also not sure if H1N1 affects the brain stem. We are still waiting on the results of the MRI.

Looking back over the weekend a couple of days removed I can say now that his blood pressure was pretty stable. Day-by-day and hour-by-hour there were fluctuations and times we had to actively manage this. His oxygen saturations were very stable and we made some minor weans on the ventilator. Saturday’s chest x-ray looked better, Sunday basically the same and this morning it looked worse. His plural infusion around his lung can greatly affect the x-ray and it appeared that there was more today. It also appeared because of the infusion that part of his right lung has collapsed. So more chest PT was started today, pounding his chest to loosen any secretions and open back up any alveoli that have closed.

Raymond kidneys are working so well that many of individual diuretic doses were held. Sunday his diuril was stopped and today his lasix was officially lowered from four times to two times a day and his most recent dose held. Some of the extra fluid in his body is going down as he can draw it back into his veins.

All and all Raymond is doing well. The doctors, nurses, and Respiratory therapists (RT) are preparing us for a slow recovery as the lungs heal enough to get off the ventilator. I think neurology will conclude that he is not having seizures, and the brain bleed will reabsorb and MRI will not show anything that is not unusual for a heavily sedated child that has been in ICU for six and a half weeks.

We love you all, please continue to pray for Raymond as you so faithfully have been doing. Raymond has felt and benefited greatly from the prayers and needs them as part of his continual healing. He is so much more stable but still has very sick lungs and we do not want any new issues.

Pray for Raymond’s lung improvement
Pray that Raymond has not had any seizures and the brain bleed will reabsorb over the next week and the MRI does not find any structural problems
Pray for rest and peace for Helen and I as we prepare for the next phase of his recovery

Love in Christ,
