I have noticed over time the same questions have been ask. So I put a little something together in hopes that it will be helpful to all of you.

What will there first day be like at BC? I wonder if he or she is ok. Check out this site, it gives you some idea what there first day was like.

Can they take anything to BC with them?
Recruits should go with what they have on there back. Everything will then come back to you in "The Box" They can keep their watch, religious metels and a wallet. Along with some toiletries.

"The Box"
This will be hard. This was your first test. The call will come. Short and to the point. " I made it, I am here, I am fine, Love you, I gotta go" Then "Your kid comes home in a box " minus your kid. Yes, you will cry but you will be fine. Then the form letter comes. You have waited days for a letter, something and all you get is a form letter with a small note at the bottom from your recruit. But this is all good. This form letter is full of info. Now you can mail out all the letters you have been writting. Remember to send a few picture along with encouraging words. Lots of letters. Mail is like gold to your recruit. They live for Mail day every Sunday. They also get to write home every Sunday. So run to the mail box every Wednesday for your letter. Some recruits will get to call home. This is something that is earned. And the calls are very random. Strange times of the day. But its always nice to hear from them.

"PIR date"
There is a web site to check grad dates.
http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/upcoming_grads.asp

Your form letter should have given you your recruits Division Number. You will need this to check your PIR date. If your divison is not listed. Be patient, it will be. Once PIR date is given and you know your child is doing well. Then you can start making plans for your trip.

There are many hotels in the area. I would recommed to rent a car. It makes life easier. After PIR most Sailors will be able to leave. But make sure they are back on time. No gifts at PIR. Sorry to say they are still in BC. Sailors can not take anything back to base with them. Enjoy your weekend with you son or daughter. Love the changes they made, see the sites of Chicago. Live for the moment. It all ends way to soon. But it will be the best weekend of you life.

I love the fact that this site has grown so large. I don't mean to make lite of Boot Camp but if you don't put a little humor in your life what a sad world it would be. Hope to talk you all of you later. Donna

DAVIDSmom is so right! On PIR Liberty, the Sailors have to return the same way they left and be on time! Our sons had 40 minutes of getting "beat" ( IT or intense training) before taps because two female Sailors were 10 minutes late. See, one or two do not follow the rules - they all pay.

DAVIDSmom That is their job for 2 to 3 years. The better their division progresses, the better it is for them. They have to make or break. Now that your son is in "A" School, I bet he is encountering some Sailors from other divisions that do not carry the same ethics. I know my son is happy he was in Division 901. I bet yours is too! I guess I have a special place in my heart for some RDCs and their families. As you and I were going through BC ~ lol ~ I stated that it is not like labor. We forgot that pain. They will not forget boot camp. ~ KK

I got my Kid-n-a-Box! It arrived about an hour ago! I don't know why, but I was so relieved to get it! I didn't even cry...it was just relief! Drew shipped on 12/16 and I stopped by the recruiting office today (with fresh-baked banana bread!) and his ship/div was still not posted but I got hugs from the recruiters AND the station Chief and they said they will follow up everyday until I had it!!! Yea! Today was a good day!

My son arrived the evening of 9/21. The box was labeled to ship 9/22; it arrived 9/24. The form letter was post marked 9/28. Ok so I saved everything! ~ lol

When you get your form letter ~ Your SRs' addresses will have a total of five (5) lines. Some N4Ms drop a line as they are too busy reading the hand written information. Make sure you have a total of 5 lines in your addresses.

I never prepared mailing labels. I would pre-address envelopes to myself for my son and include one or two a week in my letters. I felt if he was taking the time to write to me, I would hand write in caps and slash my zeros too! ~ kk

I am saving the box! ~ kk

Leave it to my son to be backwards with everything. I got the form letter 6 days after he left and the box 4 days later. Only Adam could do something completely different then everyone else in bootcamp ;-)

I got my letter within a week of getting the box which was about 2 weeks ago since my son went in late Nov. Going through the box is HARD! Yes, all of the emotions that you said! The letter is a Navy form letter, with just a few lines for your son to write in...bascially grad info...which can change depending on how they do.

O.K., Got THE BOX today didn't open it at first. I thought if i waited maybe i wouldn't cry, Well that didn't work the tears came. He's only been at b/c for seven days yet it feels like seven years. This is a great thing he's doing with his life so why am i so sad and lost??It's a very confusing emotion. HAPPY,SAD,PROUD,WORRIED,EXCITED,ANXIOUS, Does anyone know how long after THE BOX arrives that THE LETTER might come ???

My son, just started 3rd week, was enrolled in PASS today. Because of the Christmas holidays,he will be backed up 2 weeks from grad rather than one which is usual for PASS program. Does anyone have experience with their recruits being in this program? He was very sad and disappointed to be forced into leaving his division (not to return to it). Sad to be in PASS. Info?
