I have noticed over time the same questions have been ask. So I put a little something together in hopes that it will be helpful to all of you.

What will there first day be like at BC? I wonder if he or she is ok. Check out this site, it gives you some idea what there first day was like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd7_yp0Hkwc

Can they take anything to BC with them?
Recruits should go with what they have on there back. Everything will then come back to you in "The Box" They can keep their watch, religious metels and a wallet. Along with some toiletries.

"The Box"
This will be hard. This was your first test. The call will come. Short and to the point. " I made it, I am here, I am fine, Love you, I gotta go" Then "Your kid comes home in a box " minus your kid. Yes, you will cry but you will be fine. Then the form letter comes. You have waited days for a letter, something and all you get is a form letter with a small note at the bottom from your recruit. But this is all good. This form letter is full of info. Now you can mail out all the letters you have been writting. Remember to send a few picture along with encouraging words. Lots of letters. Mail is like gold to your recruit. They live for Mail day every Sunday. They also get to write home every Sunday. So run to the mail box every Wednesday for your letter. Some recruits will get to call home. This is something that is earned. And the calls are very random. Strange times of the day. But its always nice to hear from them.

"PIR date"
There is a web site to check grad dates.
http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/upcoming_grads.asp

Your form letter should have given you your recruits Division Number. You will need this to check your PIR date. If your divison is not listed. Be patient, it will be. Once PIR date is given and you know your child is doing well. Then you can start making plans for your trip.

There are many hotels in the area. I would recommed to rent a car. It makes life easier. After PIR most Sailors will be able to leave. But make sure they are back on time. No gifts at PIR. Sorry to say they are still in BC. Sailors can not take anything back to base with them. Enjoy your weekend with you son or daughter. Love the changes they made, see the sites of Chicago. Live for the moment. It all ends way to soon. But it will be the best weekend of you life.

I love the fact that this site has grown so large. I don't mean to make lite of Boot Camp but if you don't put a little humor in your life what a sad world it would be. Hope to talk you all of you later. Donna

Dear 409's and Dora, it is not atypical for BS to fall on a Weds or even Thurs. Depends on the # of Div graduating. As Jenny said, they only run on weekdays and only do a few Divisions at a time. After being up all day, they start at 8pm and go for 12 hours straight, followed immediately by the Capping Ceremony.

Please don't be too worried though. The ONLY way to fail BS is to get injured, fall ill, or fall asleep. That's where team effort comes in! It's something they all work toward, look forward to and their adrenaline is pumping! They are pretty wiped out later when they make that "I'm a Sailor" call. =) I hope you don't miss that, (who is your provider? Check with them about coverage) but it's very possible you will be in route as he goes through and when he calls. Let him know that and that you do want him to leave a message. IF a recruit should fail on or before Weds. night, they are given another last chance with another DIv, including on Thursday night. In that case they may be too tired to participate in the PIR ceremony and be ordered to sit in the upper bleachers. The important thing is that they graduate with their shipmates and you get to spend the weekend with them afterward. :-)

Cathee, it seems that a lot of them get the "ricky crud". They get some kind of sickness or pinkeye.it's just like when they went to daycare or school, lol. All those new germs to share in close quarters. Dora, battlestations do start the week before PIR but don't run on Friday or Sat night. So yes, some parents may make the trip to GL not knowing if they passed yet. If you miss the phone call they should be able to try again. Try not to freak out. Btw, the Sat before PIR is the Captains Cup event, that's a day of fun where the graduating divisions compete against each other. My son said it was fun. He also said Battlestations was "epic" and wants to do it again, lol

Does anone know what this means:
Yesterday I got a call from my son and I was obviously EXCITED, I said to him "3 more weeks and you will be a US sailor", he said back, "Not just a US sailor mom, I will be, I think he said, a fireman too, I got a red stripe" I had so much I wanted to say to him that I dont even remember if I asked him what that meant, and If i did, I completely forget what he said. Did I hear him wrong?

I received a call from my son yesterday and he told me that they were doing battlestations in 2 weeks. That gives them almost a full week before graduation. Ill have to ask him again in my next letter if he knows the date of their BS.

Lana and everyone else whose recruits have gotten sick or hurt:
My son went in on 9/11 and has had his wisdom teeth pulled, rushed to the hospital because he passed out, fell and hit his head (needed a CAT scan), sprained his ankle, got pink eye, and has had tonsilitis...and he is still set to graduate with his division on time on 11/7. He went on "light duty" but has caught up. All of his sickensses and injuries happened in his first 3 weeks and he is doing just fine and he sounds great!! Hopefully this comforts you and your sailor will also be able to graduate with his division on time. Good Luck to all and CONGRATS to all sailors and their moms who graduated yesterday!!!!!!!
Dora Ryan's Aunt Comment by Dora Ryan's Aunt on October 18, 2008 at 9:31am
Help,
Does anyone know if they really wait until Wed and Thurs before PIR to do BS. Ryan's letter said that's when 409's BS are. That seems late most everyone will already be in GL's what happens if they don't pass and we don't get cell reception. We are really beginning to freak out here. If anyone knows for sure please let all of us in 409 know THANKS

Cathee,
My son got sick in about the 3rd week. There's a lot of sickness there from them being in such close quarters and being run down physically. They will let him be SIQ ( sick in quarters) if need be (if he even gets sick) and it doesn't usually cause them to be set back. My son also got pinkeye while there.
