A place to talk, ask questions, share story's. When your child leaves for boot camp its a long 8 weeks. We can all be here for each other.

I have noticed over time the same questions have been ask. So I put a little something together in hopes that it will be helpful to all of you.
What will there first day be like at BC? I wonder if he or she is ok. Check out this site, it gives you some idea what there first day was like.

Can they take anything to BC with them?
Recruits should go with what they have on there back. Everything will then come back to you in "The Box" They can keep their watch, religious metels and a wallet. Along with some toiletries.
"The Box"
This will be hard. This was your first test. The call will come. Short and to the point. " I made it, I am here, I am fine, Love you, I gotta go" Then "Your kid comes home in a box " minus your kid. Yes, you will cry but you will be fine. Then the form letter comes. You have waited days for a letter, something and all you get is a form letter with a small note at the bottom from your recruit. But this is all good. This form letter is full of info. Now you can mail out all the letters you have been writting. Remember to send a few picture along with encouraging words. Lots of letters. Mail is like gold to your recruit. They live for Mail day every Sunday. They also get to write home every Sunday. So run to the mail box every Wednesday for your letter. Some recruits will get to call home. This is something that is earned. And the calls are very random. Strange times of the day. But its always nice to hear from them.
"PIR date"
There is a web site to check grad dates.

Your form letter should have given you your recruits Division Number. You will need this to check your PIR date. If your divison is not listed. Be patient, it will be. Once PIR date is given and you know your child is doing well. Then you can start making plans for your trip.
There are many hotels in the area. I would recommed to rent a car. It makes life easier. After PIR most Sailors will be able to leave. But make sure they are back on time. No gifts at PIR. Sorry to say they are still in BC. Sailors can not take anything back to base with them. Enjoy your weekend with you son or daughter. Love the changes they made, see the sites of Chicago. Live for the moment. It all ends way to soon. But it will be the best weekend of you life.
I love the fact that this site has grown so large. I don't mean to make lite of Boot Camp but if you don't put a little humor in your life what a sad world it would be. Hope to talk you all of you later. Donna

It's not that they aren't allowed to have colored envelopes....there is a general "rule of thumb" as to mail for BC recruits. The recruits usually don't want attention drawn to them for colored/altered envelopes or bulky mail or musical cards because some of the RDC's don't like this kind of mail. Some don't care, but the general idea is better safe than sorry. the recruits want to stay "under the radar" so to speak and not draw attention. So plain white envelopes are generally best.

Comment by Janet R. (Ari's Mom) 1 day ago - NanCan - no box but I am okay with that...other than her watch she took nothing that we would worry about. I too have a card and letters in the box this morning. I got stuck at work until 10:30 last night and had to re-read the one I wrote last night to make sure it made sense. I took a week of vacation before Ari left so an 16 hour day about did me in! How did the opening of your box go for you? How are you feeling today?

- Catherine -- I am sorry, I didn't to laugh but have the same fear from some of the people in our circle of family and friends...I have decided, at least until I can trust them, that they need to send everything to us and we will ship it to Ari. Her grandmother asked her sister to forward her Christmas presents to her...really?...seriously? I am sitting here picturing gopher wood planes...quite an image!!! :o)

- I wanted to share this with you all, mainly because only Moms will understand. So I was sitting here watching the morning news, and they do a remote at Lambert International Airport in St Louis. They are showing all of our Military heros arriving for flights HOME for Christmas! They go into the USO and low and behold, there is a group of sailors. They talk to them, and they have been in seabee training at Ft Leonardwood MO. One guy was updating his facebook to let everyone know he was on his way! Even at 5am the city really stepped up! They had carolers, greeters, and LOTS of goodies! I just sat here watching and crying like a baby. Then in walks my husband, he looks at the TV, shakes his head and walks out. LOL

Comment by janice 1 day ago - I just received our PIR date Feb 12. I cann't wait. He wrote a comment on the bottom of the letter that let me know he still has his since of humor. It is harder on us than on them. I was in BC on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years many years ago and you are so busy that you don't even think about it. That being said it still doesn't help us. I miss him so much I understand how my mom felt years ago.
