I have noticed over time the same questions have been ask. So I put a little something together in hopes that it will be helpful to all of you.

What will there first day be like at BC? I wonder if he or she is ok. Check out this site, it gives you some idea what there first day was like.

Can they take anything to BC with them?
Recruits should go with what they have on there back. Everything will then come back to you in "The Box" They can keep their watch, religious metels and a wallet. Along with some toiletries.

"The Box"
This will be hard. This was your first test. The call will come. Short and to the point. " I made it, I am here, I am fine, Love you, I gotta go" Then "Your kid comes home in a box " minus your kid. Yes, you will cry but you will be fine. Then the form letter comes. You have waited days for a letter, something and all you get is a form letter with a small note at the bottom from your recruit. But this is all good. This form letter is full of info. Now you can mail out all the letters you have been writting. Remember to send a few picture along with encouraging words. Lots of letters. Mail is like gold to your recruit. They live for Mail day every Sunday. They also get to write home every Sunday. So run to the mail box every Wednesday for your letter. Some recruits will get to call home. This is something that is earned. And the calls are very random. Strange times of the day. But its always nice to hear from them.

"PIR date"
There is a web site to check grad dates.
http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/upcoming_grads.asp

Your form letter should have given you your recruits Division Number. You will need this to check your PIR date. If your divison is not listed. Be patient, it will be. Once PIR date is given and you know your child is doing well. Then you can start making plans for your trip.

There are many hotels in the area. I would recommed to rent a car. It makes life easier. After PIR most Sailors will be able to leave. But make sure they are back on time. No gifts at PIR. Sorry to say they are still in BC. Sailors can not take anything back to base with them. Enjoy your weekend with you son or daughter. Love the changes they made, see the sites of Chicago. Live for the moment. It all ends way to soon. But it will be the best weekend of you life.

I love the fact that this site has grown so large. I don't mean to make lite of Boot Camp but if you don't put a little humor in your life what a sad world it would be. Hope to talk you all of you later. Donna

MamaBear;do you think that in Navy Lodge will help to get a shuttle, once you are there? Is Navy Gateway Inn near to PIR than Navy Lodge?

Kelly **gunnerJ's mom** ~ I know : ) Once you have stayed at the Navy Lodge, you wonder why anyone would want to pay more for a room farther away. The Navy Lodge is so close to RTC, and most of the employees have spouses or family members that either work at RTC or are RDCs. ~ kk

My son in law who did BC in June 08 said he could not have any personal items like cell phone or laptop at his A-school until he got the okay from them. His mom mailed him his cell phone when my son-in-law said it was ok'd have them at A- School. Are you sure you can hand them their cell and laptop off at the airport ?

FYI ~ My son signed two Power of Attorney forms while at MEPS; one for medical and one for finances.

I have a question for anyone who has already PIRed: What is the dress code for mom's and dad's? I have no clue what to bring for PIR.

Re: Hotels for PIR ~ The Navy Lodge DOES NOT hold you to your 2nd, 3rd night, etc. if your Sailor is Grad-N-Go. If you find out that they are Grad-N-Go on the day of PIR, and you are not staying that night; call the Navy Lodge by 6:00 PM (I think - call for specific time.) and your reservation will be cancelled for the nights not used. They are very accomodating!

Grad-N-Go ~ If the Sailor is in a 900 Series Division, they are not usually Grad-N-Go (based on the RDC comments), There were some in the division that left on the Saturday after PIR, one of which was a delayed PIR Sailor due to medical. As far as the rate and when you leave, this is not really consistent. As the Sailors that left on 11/24 were diverse in rate and location of "A" School. The Sailors know faily far in advance. The orders for my son's division were available over a week before PIR. Although, they were not given their actually orders right away as it was a mixed (co-ed) division and they were withheld until one gender decided to get along with each other. Yes ~ some do not play nice and they all pay! Be prepared for anything when you go to PIR weekend. We took my son's cell and laptop just in case things changed, as we could then hand them off at the airport. If your Sailor is Grad-N-Go, you cna request the security pass at the airport to wait for their flight with them. You can also hang out at the USO Lounge. Families are allowed with the military. Ask when you make your reservation about cancellations. ~ kk

I really wish that all of you could of had a recruiter like Adam did. Everyone in that office has been amazing. His recruiter called me the morning after Adam left with his ship and division info. I would hate to think how much more of my sanity would be gone if not for them.

I remember when my son was in DEP, I was encouraged to have him sign a power of attorney for me so I could have full communication - it's worth getting done for future issues.
