I have noticed over time the same questions have been ask. So I put a little something together in hopes that it will be helpful to all of you.

What will there first day be like at BC? I wonder if he or she is ok. Check out this site, it gives you some idea what there first day was like.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd7_yp0Hkwc

Can they take anything to BC with them?
Recruits should go with what they have on there back. Everything will then come back to you in "The Box" They can keep their watch, religious metels and a wallet. Along with some toiletries.

"The Box"
This will be hard. This was your first test. The call will come. Short and to the point. " I made it, I am here, I am fine, Love you, I gotta go" Then "Your kid comes home in a box " minus your kid. Yes, you will cry but you will be fine. Then the form letter comes. You have waited days for a letter, something and all you get is a form letter with a small note at the bottom from your recruit. But this is all good. This form letter is full of info. Now you can mail out all the letters you have been writting. Remember to send a few picture along with encouraging words. Lots of letters. Mail is like gold to your recruit. They live for Mail day every Sunday. They also get to write home every Sunday. So run to the mail box every Wednesday for your letter. Some recruits will get to call home. This is something that is earned. And the calls are very random. Strange times of the day. But its always nice to hear from them.

"PIR date"
There is a web site to check grad dates.
http://www1.netc.navy.mil/nstc/rtcgl/upcoming_grads.asp

Your form letter should have given you your recruits Division Number. You will need this to check your PIR date. If your divison is not listed. Be patient, it will be. Once PIR date is given and you know your child is doing well. Then you can start making plans for your trip.

There are many hotels in the area. I would recommed to rent a car. It makes life easier. After PIR most Sailors will be able to leave. But make sure they are back on time. No gifts at PIR. Sorry to say they are still in BC. Sailors can not take anything back to base with them. Enjoy your weekend with you son or daughter. Love the changes they made, see the sites of Chicago. Live for the moment. It all ends way to soon. But it will be the best weekend of you life.

I love the fact that this site has grown so large. I don't mean to make lite of Boot Camp but if you don't put a little humor in your life what a sad world it would be. Hope to talk you all of you later. Donna

I hope you are all doing well. I hope you are telling your SRs that there is light at the end of their BC tunnel. They may be discouraged - even through BC weekend. Remind them that "A" School is a better place. A place where they can start the education and technilogical process for their Rate. My son is very happy. he is on hold for "A" School at Corry Station, Pensacola, Florida. Be positive ALWAYS!

I remember my cell buzzing in my college class. I flew out of the room. Yes! It was the 847 area code! I sat in the hallway for 40 minutes, being the bravest mom ever, trying not to make it known the tears were streaming down my face. My professor was good about it. My professor said, "I hope you told him that I would never be able to do what he is doing. I so respect him for this." I said, "Me too!"

Hang in there! Cry in the shower ~ : ) ~kk

I just asked my son about grad-n-go just to be sure and he said the RDC's usually know who is one and who is not but some of them can be %&&* at times so they can withhold info till the last possible moment. He new of a few that this happened to but not in his division. Most of the RDCs do want the families to enjoy PIR weekend with their new sailors. Depending on if no one messses up like getting back to base late or girls still having their makeup on when they have to muster will depend the next day if they have liberty or going to liberty late. Hopefully everyone follows the rules. Some recruits also have watch during liberty weekend which are between 2 and 4 hours. You wont know until you pick them up if anyone messes up because you have no contact with them after you dropped them off

A few things to remember ~ If you have binoculars - take them. If you forget something or want snacks for the room ~ ask the staff at the Navy Lodge for the directions to the Walmart ~ not far. Their is a gas station near the Navy Lodge run by the NEX. It has things like bread, milk, snacks, etc. - like a very basic convenient store. You can shop there with your GL RTC PIR parking pass. Pass on the gas - you can get it cheaper on the main roads. ~ kk

Reservations for the Navy Lodge ~ If you make them by telephone, tell them you are reserving a room for your family members' PIR and the date of the PIR. They will ask you the SR's complete name. This is all the information I gave them other than my personal information (# in room, address, phone, credit card, etc). They will tell you the rules (i.e. this is the ONLY time you will be able to make a reservation and check in WITHOUT your Sailor). They will ask your email for an email confirmation. I did not have to give a partial SS#, nor did I have to give a pay grade. When you make the reservation online, it may ask "Seaman Recruit." The telephone number you call is the service that handles ALL of the Navy Lodge reservations. The Navy Lodge is managed by the NEX. Some of the reservationists are more knowledgeable than others about each facility. If you ask the reservationist a question, you will not always get the proper, or same, answer. Kind of like the IRS ~ lol If you want the scoop on the facility ~ call the number on the website and push the prompt for the "desk."

When you appear, you will look like a deer in headlights! The staff is so use to this. You will find the Navy Lodge very secure. The Great Lakes Police are there a lot.

Do not be surprised if your Sailor does not want to use the front door. This may seem odd to you, But they have been on the lookout for Officers for 7.5 to 9 weeks. They may appear skiddish. They will keep their Military Bearing the entire weekend. Just give them a few giggles. It will take them a while to relax. ~ kk

mother always Based on my trip in November, and what I am told by the Navy Lodge, and what you can see on Google Earth ~ the Navy Lodge is the closest, as it is in the military housing neighborhood. ~ : ) ~ kk

mother always ~ The Navy Lodge will give you business cards with telephone numbers of the shuttle drivers they recommend. I did not keep mine, as we decided to drive. When you check in, ask them. They are very very nice ~ you will see. Also, they have a small bag breakfast in the morning (juice, yogurt, pastry, etc.) - if they do nto run out. This will tide you over until you get to take you Sailor to breakfast! ~ kk

CatherinTxmomofnuke, I only had to give my daughter's name to make our reservations, but I see on here that others have had to give additional info.
Debbie in MD Comment by Debbie in MD 1 day ago
My husband made the reservations. I just talked to him - he said that he had to give them Mark's name and pay grade (E1, E2, etc.) don't know where you get that (hubby knew it). He doesn't think they have a shuttle but isn't sure. He did say that it's only about 10 minutes to PIR.
