Good After, I just got a call from my son Tommy, he got his assignment. USS Nebraska out of Bangor, Washington. Are there any other mom's on the USS Nebraska?

Hi vidgal and welcome! We can all relate to your missing your sailor- that's why we're all here, I'd wager! ;-) What is "Dolphins"?

HI Ladies, I just joined this group. My son Lowell is on the USSN Charlotte. He has been out since Jan. I really miss him. On the bright side he did get his Dolphins. I'm very proud of him.

Lack of curiosity is amazing. My son doesn't even know when he will be done with "A" school, yet every Mom on the Sub School page knows when graduation is. Guess he is really focusing on work daily rather than big picture, especially since he will be in Groton for an addition 7 weeks after he is done due to the freeze on sending anyone to their new duty station - at least subs.

Sometimes the lack of curiosity is amazing. Although, when my son began boot camp a year ago, the recruits were told to focus on today and not next week. Still, we ask him questions about things we think he would have a vested interest in and are surprised when he both doesn't know and isn't interested in finding out.

What do you think they are doing with the extra time?

Hello! I asked my son about BC now being 13 weeks. He said yes, it is true. His PIR was 05/01 and he said those coming in after that started going for 13 weeks.

Copied this from Navy News. Note the bolded comment. Perhaps this underlines the added weeks to basic training. This is our new Navy:

CNO Shore Activities Sailor of the Year Announced
Story Number: NNS090529-11
Release Date: 5/29/2009 3:09:00 PM

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class (SW) Rebekah Blowers, Chief of Naval Operations Public Affairs

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The chief of naval operations (CNO) announced the winners of the CNO Shore Activities Sailor of the Year (SOY) in a ceremony at the Pentagon May 29.

Adm. Gary Roughead, CNO, announced Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (SW/AW/FMF) James Nicholson, as the CNO Shore Activities SOY. Nicholson will be meritoriously advanced to chief petty officer and receive a Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal in an official ceremony in July.

The other three candidates were Explosive Ordnance Disposal 1st Class (EWS/SW) Vincent Demakas, the Total Force SOY; Storekeeper 1st Class (EXW/AW) Kesha McKibben, the Vice CNO SOY; and Religious Program Specialist 1st Class (FMF) Chasity Morales, the Fleet Forces Command Shore SOY. Each of the candidates received a Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal from the CNO during the ceremony.

"There is a saying that goes, 'The best sermon is lived, not preached.' And that is exactly what these Sailors have done. What they do every day is they make a statement about who they are and more importantly about who we are as a Navy, and that is a terrific example for all of us to continue to pursue," Roughead said.

Nicholson said he was grateful to his family for their support and that he was proud to stand alongside the other SOY candidates.

"Our Sailors today are not just Sailors -- they're Soldiers, they're Airmen, they're Coast Guardsmen," Nicholson said. "The Sailors that we represent right now are bar-none the best Sailors of the world and to be a part of that and to be representing that – I just thank you all."

Each year, every ship, station and command around the world chooses its Sailor of the year based on leadership, professionalism, dedication, and superior performance. These selectees compete against recipients from other commands competing at higher and higher echelons until the Navy's four finest are chosen and only one selected as the CNO Shore Activities SOY.
