Hello! I am a former member of Navy Moms and have come back from the depths of computer chaos. My son is a Culinary Specialist currently stationed in Kingsbay, Georgia. This August will be his 3rd year enlisted and he has just taken his E-4 test while underway; as usual the results take quite awhile but he said he felt pretty confident. Thankfully he returned home from the longest tour he has had and as always, there is no greater feeling than to hear his voice and know that I am the first phone call before he's off the sub. I hope to get to know all of you; by the way, I live in Indianapolis, Indiana so if anyone is close by, please let me know.

I'm not sure if my girl is being secretive on purpose or what but not only haven't I got to talk to her I don't even know where she is going. Or for how long!

Wow White House mess! Congrats!

Wanda - I guess that means they tell you when they're coming home? BTW she looks so happy,

OK, let me try to answer some questions. It seems to me Jason has not had as much opportunity to see the sights at their ports-of-call as surface sailors, but I guess he would have to confirm that info. Most of the time he has been on the boomers, only has been on the fast attacks for the last 3 years. The 3 years he spent on shore duty, ironically, was when he got to see the most. He did his shore duty at the White House mess, which was a great experience. The sailors assigned to this duty do a lot of different things, not just cook. He got to travel with the Presidential party on several occasions, especially during the election year of 2004. When he re-enlisted in 2006, he kept his sub qualification, which meant he had to return to the fleet for 3 years, then he is eligible to apply for White House duty again. Due to an injury, he has had to extend his sub duty, so I don't know when he will be able to try for this again.
If any of your sailors get a chance to go to Washington, DC for shore duty, encourage them to do it. The security clearance process was kind of intense, (the FBI came to my house and his high school), but it was definitely worth it. However, he became even more secretive after his White House tour was complete, so if you have trouble getting your sons and daughters to talk now, this may not be to your liking!

Sailors are not allowed to have cell phones on while ships are underway. If they are in port they can turn on their cell phone. In foreign ports they have access to some phones to use if they have phone cards. They have to be special phone cards so don't go buy one and send it to your sailor, they may not be able to use it. Sometimes bases have poor reception due to all the radar and such they have. I've experienced my sons being everywhere from the gulf to S. America, CA to FL, Asia to Scotland and it's always different wherever they go.

Welcome Joyce -N- Ivan. I hope your daughter likes it. When my son shipped out for short trips I couldn't reach him at first but was able to on subsequent trips. I'm not certain what changed, I think he was in other ports on his later trips and at first he was just at sea. BTW, I like that floating cell tower idea. : )

Hello everyone. My daughter is a CS on the Ashland LSD 48. It's her first ship since boot snd I havent heard from her for almost a week. They need floating cell towers so I could call her cell phone lol. I did get to visit her at Little Creek before she shipped out and that was good. I really liked the Virginia Beach area just didnt get to stay long enough. I'm glad to have found this group I cant get to much info. Talk to ya later
