Barbarajean -
Read as much as you can about boot camp, etc. I joined the smaller but more intimate Navy-Parents.com when my son was in DEP (NavyforMoms didn't exist then). It was a Godsend and a lifesaver. I learned so much and was excited for my Sailor as he prepared to leave, instead of dreading him being gone.

Kris, my Sailor entered A School pretty much straight from boot (after our fabulous PIR weekend... not to be missed!). He was home for about 2 weeks upon finishing A School, then headed to his station in WA.
This is an exciting time for you. Enjoy your son's time here, but relish the thought that he is 'on his way' when he leaves for BC. A huge step in a young person's life.... and parent's too. While I missed my son when he left for BC, I was so happy that he was moving forward with his life.

Katie entered BC on 10/8/08 - PIRd 12/5/09 - Grad A School 4/1/09 - and was off to the USS Essex on 4/25/09 after coming home for 2 weeks.

Hi there, I'm new to this and I have a son leaving for BC on sept 29th He is going in as a DC. Was just wondering if those of you that have sons/daughters that are DC 's did they go stright to a ship after A school?

My grandson, Josh, leaves for boot camp Jan 5th 09 and I am trying to get all the information that I can before so I know what to do. He is going into Damage Control and I am more nervous than he is. It's hard to let go but I know I have too and he is going to be OK.

Just wondering what isADC damage controlman /fireman mean? my son has written me and said they change his job and i was just wondering what this consit of? can some one explain please?

Ah, the Gurnee Mall. That's where my son and I saw "I Am Legend" after boot camp. It was fun to drive around that area during his liberty. There are plenty of restaurants near Gurnee Mall as well. (in response to Marianne's comment)

Hi Debbie, Austin is on the USS Donald Cook. Your son is lucky that he is there and able to call home every day. That is what I miss the most with Austin, I can't talk to him everyday. At least there is email.
