OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Yesterday my son went to MEP's and when made it to job selection there was only 1 job. His recruiter hadn't prepared him for this and what to do if there was not a job he wanted. They did let him call his recruiter who told him to take job and he can request a change. My son did this and we feel like it may of been the wrong choice. We feel like he was taken advantage of and they wouldn't let him call us to discuss. He was told he did qualify for many other jobs but nothing else was available. He wants some type of mechanic job. The recruiter says he request change of jobs all the time. Should I believe him? How long will it take to get a new job? My son wants to join the Navy but will back out if his job doesn't change. Our family is very upset on how this played out yesterday but praying that this will be fixed. Any advice? This was not a good way to start our Navy experience.

sorry he is in DEP and won't go to boot camp until July 30. as of now.

Cindy5, rate changes after the initial signing are very common, as our family has learned this firsthand. We just went through this with our son over the summer. Don’t be disheartened! If your son has a good recruiter, he’ll work diligently to get him signed at a different rate/job when they open up.
Here’s what our son went through:
He went to MEPS in July after working with a local recruiter for a few months. He tested very high and had his heart set on Nuke. So his recruiter was priming him for a nuclear rating but while at MEPS, he was told he didn’t qualify for anything Nuke, but was never told the actual reason why. Feeling pressured to make a choice, he signed on as a logistics specialist but didn’t like any of his options. He was pretty riled up when he got home and I got involved (he was 17 at the time) and started questioning his recruiter. He finally revealed the real reason my son was DQ’d from anything nuke - he’s very colorblind - something his recruiter was aware of but still led my son to believe he could be a nuke. We had some other issues with his recruiter as well so we went up the chain and had conversations with the Petty Officer in charge at our recruiting station. Long story short: My son switched recruiters, now working only with this recruiting “manager” (not sure of his actual title) who is very seasoned and sharp. He encouraged my son to pursue an intelligence rating, specifically CTN, and after researching it, our family all agreed it’s a great fit. This new recruiter assured my son he had plenty of time for a CTN slot to open up (son is a senior in HS) and sure enough....within 45 days, new paperwork was ready to sign to get him moved to the CTN rating he wanted.

Our recruiter said rating changes are quite common, so if your son is not happy with how the recruiter is handling things, tell him to push for what he wants. He’s still in control. Being in DEP does not mean he can’t change his mind and walk away, so they’ll work with him to get him in a slot he prefers.

Thanks! I have spoken to his recruiter 2 times and he says he has already started paperwork to request change. We just have to wait until after holidays. At this time I don't have an issue with his recruiter but just not sure how much to trust them until I see it change. I just wished we would of been prepared for this so it wouldn't of been such a shock. Its sad we couldn't even enjoy seeing him being sworn in since we were so worried about him make a huge mistake.

Hi Cindy5, my son had a similar experience at MEPS (he is 17 and still a senior as well).  He went ahead and signed for a job he really isn't too sure about but we were told beforehand we could request a change.  Now if we can just get his recruiter to answer us back.  Very limited communication from his recruiter now that he has signed.  Thank you WaterLily188 for your advice, it was helpful to us also. 

so key is to stay on recruiter and let process work. Prayers for lots of patience and a great outcome.

He needs to make sure that the recruiter puts in the DAR.

Yes, definitely stay on that recruiter.  Make sure your son is following up with them often so he doesn’t fall to the bottom of the priority pile.

I know exactly how you feel right now: that gut-wrenching feeling that you weren’t prepared enough for how things would work at MEPS and the rating selection process overall. But unless you’ve had a son or daughter who has already gone through it, it’s probably normal to feel this way.
